Practice head Patrick Ayad advised an automobile manufacturer on three different projects relating to innovative distribution models and the market launch of new products in the areas of parts distribution, electromobility and shared services. The group also assisted Hyundai Motor Europe with purchasing and distribution issues, including the revision of model contract documentation for dealers and service partners, distribution antitrust support and representation in distribution litigation. Other areas of focus are the consumer goods, food and life sciences sectors, where Thomas Salomon usually takes the lead. Florian Unseld and Arne Thiermann joined the partnership.

Hogan Lovells International LLP’s ‘excellent’ team stands out for its high level of niche expertise in various healthcare-related areas. Jörg Schickert, who heads the German life sciences practice, has considerable regulatory expertise; he and Arne Thiermann, who was promoted to partner in January 2018, advised multiple companies belonging to Merz Pharma on matters concerning medical devices, pharmaceutical and compliance issues. In a highlight in the corporate space, the group assisted Centogene with a venture capital financing round totalling over €25bn; Munich-based Nikolas Zirngibl led the advice. Tanja Eisenblätter, who is based in the Hamburg office, utilised her ‘comprehensive experience’ in representing Daiichi Sankyo in several competition law disputes concerning anticoagulants. The firm was also active in the field of product liability law, providing multijurisdictional advice to a medical device manufacturer, and in the patent law area, where Alexander Klicznik represented Agilent in three infringement proceedings around mass spectrometres. ‘Magnificent patent lawyer’ Miriam Gundt; head of the digital health Continental Europe practice Matthias Schweiger; Ina Brock, who heads the global clients and industries group; and ‘gutsy’ patent law practice head Andreas von Falck are all also recommended. Hanns Jörg Herwig, Inken Knief and Désirée Maier were promoted to the partnership in January 2018.

Hogan Lovells International LLP has a broad range of expertise in environment and planning matters, advising both on plant construction projects and on regulated public sectors such as energy, water, environment, infrastructure and utilities. The Düsseldorf team, which is led by Thomas Dünchheim, advises on special environmental law issues such as fracking, mining and excavation matters as well as immission control, nature conservation and waste law. In a recent hightlight it assisted an energy generation group with the approval of the construction of a gas and steam power plant. The group advised Akasol on environmental law issues relating to its IPO and, in a separate matter, assisted a major international group with the complex remediation of contaminated sites. The client base also includes long-term client Autobahn Tank & Rast, the German Red Cross Düsseldorf and IMS Messysteme. Product-related environmental law work is headed by Munich-based Patrick Ayad and Sebastian Lach, and is increasingly relevant for the automotive industry. Florian Unseld and Arne Thiermann joined the partnership in January 2018.
