Désirée Maier focuses on white collar, compliance and internal investigations. She advises national and international clients from various industries, in particular life sciences, on all issues of compliance.

One focus of her work lies in the set-up and management of internal compliance investigations. She has particular experience in advising during dawn raids, conducting cross-border compliance investigations, understanding the different requirements from local law, US or UK law, as well as in communicating with German, US and other authorities.

The compliance group, which includes specialists from the automotive, life sciences, technology, media and communications industry groups, is recognised for its ‘situational advice’. It has seen an increase in mandates from financial institutions. The group has experience in building and implementing global compliance systems, including the development of policies, processes and the implementation of whistleblowing structures, as well as business partner compliance. It is also praised for its ‘very good’ in-house training. Désirée Maier, who is ‘particularly good’, made partner and most recently conducted a compliance management system adequacy audit at a group of companies. Sebastian Lach leads the practice and is also noted.

Hogan Lovells International LLP continues to be strategically focused on internal investigations in the context of compliance and white-collar crime, and the ‘professional’ team has ‘extensive expertise’ in technical terms and across various industries. It is instructed by companies in cases such as antitrust, money laundering and sanction infringement allegations, but also in cases of alleged embezzlement, tax evasion, harassment and bullying. Due to the mostly cross-border nature of the investigations, they often also have a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and UK Bribary Act (UKBA) reference. Practice head Sebastian Lach is well versed in handling criminal cases. Désirée Maier made partner at the beginning of 2018 and focuses exclusively on compliance and internal investigations with a focus on the life sciences sector. The team was also strengthened at the associate level.

Hogan Lovells International LLP’s ‘excellent’ team stands out for its high level of niche expertise in various healthcare-related areas. Jörg Schickert, who heads the German life sciences practice, has considerable regulatory expertise; he and Arne Thiermann, who was promoted to partner in January 2018, advised multiple companies belonging to Merz Pharma on matters concerning medical devices, pharmaceutical and compliance issues. In a highlight in the corporate space, the group assisted Centogene with a venture capital financing round totalling over €25bn; Munich-based Nikolas Zirngibl led the advice. Tanja Eisenblätter, who is based in the Hamburg office, utilised her ‘comprehensive experience’ in representing Daiichi Sankyo in several competition law disputes concerning anticoagulants. The firm was also active in the field of product liability law, providing multijurisdictional advice to a medical device manufacturer, and in the patent law area, where Alexander Klicznik represented Agilent in three infringement proceedings around mass spectrometres. ‘Magnificent patent lawyerMiriam Gundt; head of the digital health Continental Europe practice Matthias Schweiger; Ina Brock, who heads the global clients and industries group; and ‘gutsy’ patent law practice head Andreas von Falck are all also recommended. Hanns Jörg Herwig, Inken Knief and Désirée Maier were promoted to the partnership in January 2018.
