Position

Clemens Plassmann is a leader in intellectual property matters with a focus on technical IP rights (patents and utility models).

Clemens conducted numerous patent infringement lawsuits before the German civil courts and worked on parallel validity proceedings before the German Patent and Trademark Office, the German Federal Patent Court, the German Federal Supreme Court and the European Patent Office. He has a great deal of experience in coordinating multi-jurisdictional patent disputes (including arbitrations) in Europe. Clemens is also active in client counselling as regards licensing, transactional IP and the law of employees' inventions. He increasingly advises on strategic issues related to the upcoming system of the Unified Patent Court in Europe.

Hogan Lovells International LLP further bolstered its practice in 2018 with the partner promotions of Henrik Lehment and Benjamin Schröer and the promotion of Marcus Schönknecht to counsel. Recent highlights attest to the team’s strength in the telecoms, pharmaceutical and medical technology, automotive and consumer goods sectors. Practice head Andreas von Falck led the coordination of the Europe-wide enforcement of patents for Hoffmann-La Roche, including representation in patent infringement proceedings. In the telecoms industry, Schröer acted for intervening party Google in patent infringement proceedings related to to the alleged infringement of two patents by three network operators, and represented the client in parallel opposition and nullity proceedings at the EPO and Federal Patent Court. Christian Stoll led a team representing Dell as defendant in proceedings against Sisvel due to the alleged infringement of three standard patents in MP2 and MP3 technology; besides patent infringement crucial issues also concerned the right to institute proceedings, the application of FRAND requirements and the limitation of damage claims. Other clients include Olaplex, Nikon and Medinol. Key figures in the practice also include Martin Fähndrich, who is qualified as both an attorney at law and an engineer, Miriam Gundt, Alexander Klicznik, who is qualified as a patent attorney and an attorney at law, Clemens Plassmann and Steffen Steininger. Anna-Katharina Friese was promoted to counsel at the start of 2019.
