What we say about the firm's legal practice in Japan
Banking and finance
Within Banking and finance - International firms and joint ventures, Linklaters LLP is a first tier firm,
Following a strong first half to 2008, Linklaters reinforced its presence at the top of the market with several large refinancing mandates and various roles arising out of the financial crisis. For example, the team advised Hypo Real Estate Group in connection with a €50bn emergency liquidity financing provided by several German financial institutions. Christopher Bradley continued his record of acting on LBOs and is ‘fantastic to work with’, while Paul Kruger has had another exceptionally active year. Clients say ‘the bengoshi team at the firm is the best in the market, without question’ and indeed partner Akihiro Wani is recognised as being ‘a top, top legal adviser’.
Capital markets
Within Capital markets - International firms and joint ventures, Linklaters LLP is a first tier firm,
Although Linklaters’ US capabilities are somewhat overshadowed by other firms, the presence of Akihiro Wani, ‘a well-respected and very experienced partner’, has given the team an edge for domestic law, while the arrival of Andrew Carmichael from London further bolsters its international capital markets capabilities. In 2008, the group regularly advised leading Japanese financial clients on major debt and bond offerings, as well as representing Sumitomo Mitsui on its ¥923bn global offering, the largest ever by a Japanese bank. Paul Kruger is recommended as ‘a true expert’, while Peter Frost has continued to act on market-leading transactions for the group.
Corporate and M&A
Within Corporate and M&A - International firms and joint ventures, Linklaters LLP is a first tier firm,
Linklaters stabilised in 2008/09, following a reshuffle the previous year, and had a strong year, acting on a spread of cross-border and domestic deals. The practice’s work on the Jupiter Telecommunications acquisition of Mediatti Communications, one of the largest technology deals of 2008, underlines its reputation as ‘a highly sought-after team with an exemplary record’. Hiroya Yamazaki stands out from an impressive selection of bengoshi as a leading dealmaker, while Paul McNichol heads the practice.

As such, complex derivatives transactions are one example of an area where the team has the capabilities to have an edge over its competitors.
