Linklaters LLP ‘stands out for cross-border or complex deals’, and is praised for its ‘flexible approach, willingness to go the extra mile, ability to tell clients if they want too much, and market know-how’. Led by Steve Smith, who is ‘hands down one of the top performing, most knowledgeable and commercial lawyers in the market today’, the team acts for borrowers, sponsors and developers, and has added to its historically strong debt-funds client base with a number of investment and commercial bank clients, including Citibank and Wells Fargo. Smith and Scott Simpson, an ‘excellent communicator’ and ‘an invaluable port of call for advice’, advised LaSalle Investment Management and DRC Capital as lenders on the financing of Global Student Accommodation’s acquisition of a Spanish student accommodation portfolio, operating business and brand from Oaktree; the €141m deal was the client’s first in Spain. Mark O’Neill, a ‘stalwart of the industry’, also acted on a number of high-value development finance matters.
