Position

Matthew is a commercial property lawyer and heads the real estate group. He is also a member of the firm’s management board. He deals with a broad range of commercial property work including property investment, the acquisition and disposal of business premises and portfolio management, including complex landlord and tenant issues. Matthew is particularly recognised for his expertise in the property aspects of recoveries and insolvency. He advises a number of banks and secured lenders and insolvency practitioners on recovery strategies, appointments and disposals. Matthew and his team are known for their ability to help lenders and Insolvency Practitioners effect exit strategies on more complex matters and to provide effective solutions for the associated issues that arise on receivership/administrations. Clients for whom Matthew acts include several clearing banks, pension funds, Marina Developments Limited, Diamond Property Holdings, and State Securities plc.

Lester Aldridge LLP’s insolvency and corporate recovery lawyers Nick Keitley and Melia Hirst ‘are a dependable team’ whose ‘response times and knowledge are second to none’. Lester Aldridge LLPconsistently delivers a very high standard of service, even on the most contentious and complex of issues’; the team has ‘high-calibre individuals with a vast breadth of experience and knowledge’. It frequently advises clients on high-value site acquisitions and divestments, portfolio management matters as well as freehold and leasehold management issues. The team has developed a specialty in advising clients on industrial estate acquisitions; highlights included assisting McCarthy & Stone with its £6.4m acquisition from Travis Perkins of the Churchfield industrial estate in Walton-on-Thames, including advising on the planning issues and infrastructure matters for the site. It also advised Norwich & Peterborough on multiple secured lending deals on commercial property venues, with an aggregate value of £50m. Other highlights included advising Lewis Investment on its several acquisitions of retail, office and leisure asset investments totalling £40m. Also on the client roster are Big Yellow, Care South and Bloor Homes. Practice head Matthew Barrow is ‘flexible, practical and willing to negotiate’, with experience in commercial property financing and portfolio management. The team also includes development head Roger Woolley, who advises on development agreements and disposals.

The group, which has strengths in property investment and management, real estate finance and residential development, acts for a number of well-known clients in the telecoms, healthcare and marine port sectors. Mark Benham leads the department’s housebuilder practice and acted for McCarthy & Stone on the £6m acquisition of Churchfield Industrial Estate for the development of assisted living apartments. Benham advised the same client on the acquisition of land from Kent County Cricket Club. On the telecoms front, Suki Samra is providing ongoing advice to EE on network improvement matters. In an example of the team’s real estate finance capabilities, Samra is advising Aldermore Bank on secured lending transactions totalling more than £100m throughout 2016 and 2017. The department is headed by the ‘technically excellent and always availableMatthew Barrow, who splits his time between the Bournemouth and Southampton offices and focuses on secured lending, investment acquisitions and portfolio management. Other key figures include Roger Woolley and Guy Morgan, the latter of whom specialises in healthcare premises development.
