Position

Richard Stein’s practice covers judicial review and human rights. He specialises in cases dealing with health issues, including medical ethics and hospital closures, education, planning/environment and community care as well as those of a more general political/human rights nature. He acts principally for campaigning/community groups and individuals challenging decisions of local authorities, quangos and government departments. Richard acted in the high-profile cases of Diane Blood; Re S, (forced caesarean); exp Belgium, (Pinochet); Ms B, right to die; exp Watts, (NHS treatment abroad); exp FPANI, (Northern Ireland abortion rights); Charlotte Wyatt; Corner House 1 (Protective costs orders); Corner House v Director SFO (Saudi & BAe corruption investigation); Smith v NE Derbyshire PCT (patient involvement in health changes); Binyam Mohamed v Foreign Secretary; Serdar Mohammed v MoD (transfer of Afghan detainees); HS2Action Alliance v SoS for Transport (compensation for HS2 blight); UK Uncut v HMRC (Goldman Sachs tax); Stop Stansted Expansion v Airports Commission; Save Lewisham Hospital v SoS for Health; Whitston v MoJ (against mesothelioma court rule changes).
