Career

Nick joined Kingsley Napley in May 2017 and is a senior associate in the Public Law team.

Nick advises public authorities, individuals and private sector companies on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious administrative and public law matters. He has experience across a variety of sectors including energy and infrastructure, financial services, pensions, planning, transport and gambling. He has advised in various commercial and public sector contexts as well as on the public law aspects of criminal and regulatory investigations and proceedings. He also has experience representing core participants in public inquiries.

 

Nick’s trial experience includes judicial review proceedings and statutory challenges acting for private sector clients (claimants, defendants and interested parties) and professional disciplinary proceedings representing public authorities. He has also represented individuals across a range of contentious matters – including SFO criminal and FCA regulatory investigations, police disciplinary matters and civil proceedings.

Before joining Kingsley Napley, Nick was a senior associate in the Administrative & Public Law and Corporate Crime & Investigations teams at Herbert Smith Freehills. He trained with Herbert Smith and, before converting to law, studied history at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Sophie Kemp has substantial expertise in major public inquiries and inquests and is representing a former Metropolitan Police commander in connection with the undercover policing inquiry. Other noted team members include regulatory expert Iain Miller,  Emily Carter  'who is not afraid to provide advice which may be unpopular with the client',  Caroline Day and Nick Wrightson. The team acted for David Crompton, the former Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, in a landmark judicial review against the Police and Crime Commissioner, in which he successfully challenged the decision to force him to resign following the Hillsborough Inquest verdicts. In other work, it is advising on major public inquires in the legal, healthcare and energy sectors.
