Pavel Marc, Partner

Novalia Co-Founder Pavel Marc explains how to redesign a business law firm for the digital age.

1) What do you see as the main points that differentiate Novalia from your competitors?

First, we are an all-partner law firm, which is quite unusual among business law firms in CEE. With most firms here you get many associates per partner. Second, our infrastructure and working environment resembles a technology startup rather than a law firm. We do not have desk phones. We do not assign office rooms or even workstations to our partners.

2) How does this design benefit clients?

Clients everywhere like partner access. What they love though is partner attention to their project from start to finish. We have had terrific client feedback on the efficiency with which we operate. Clients return and give us new business with higher added value, which our model is designed to execute best.

3) Are lawyers attracted to your way of working?

It’s not for everybody. You’ve got to be able to clear your desk at the end of every day, because you’ll have a different desk tomorrow. Yet our partners find our infrastructure very comfortable. Work-life balance is finally not a joke here. It is not a coincidence that half of our partners are women.

4) Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

We have three core service lines: M&A, Digital Economy and Technology Investments, and something we call “the outsourced in-house counsel”. We are operating at full capacity. We are not after growing billable hours. We are after growing the value of our time. In our model, the firm’s growth is driven by attracting new partners.

5) Where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

It will be twice as old as it is now but hopefully truthful to its original constitution and having added a number of strong, brilliant, open-minded partners. When you have the right setup, great clients follow.

Do you do any business with the Czech state or municipal entities in Czechia? The question also applies to corporations or entities controlled or directly financed by government. If the answer is yes, you need to make sure that contracts concluded with such entities have been uploaded to an online public register.
