Wouter Lauwers, Managing Partner

K law’s Managing Partner Wouter Lauwers reflects on the changing legal market and how to adapt to clients’ changing needs

What do you see as the main points that differentiate K law from your competitors?

At K law, we are extremely client focused, efficient and solution oriented. As part of a global and multidisciplinary network, we can tackle our clients’ issues from a business-oriented, not just legal, perspective whenever needed, meeting our clients local and global needs.  We also are people focused and radiate that towards the market. We have a strong belief that our people make the difference and our clients appreciate that. Hence our tagline: “Effective. Proactive. Creative; more than a law firm”.  K law’s very significant growth in the past years, shows, one might say, that our approach works.

Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

I believe that all of our practices will show significant growth. This growth will be driven through changes and/or uncertainty in the marketplace (such as Brexit), changes in legislation (such as the new Company Law Code, an upcoming new civil law code in Belgium, new MiFID regulations, etc.) and a continuous surge of compliance obligations.

What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Over the past two years and in the years to come, we have and will consistently focus on innovation with an emphasis on investments in new technology.   These investments include both technology platforms and internal operating systems and software in order to enhance and upgrade our client service experience and also to fundamentally change how we operate.  Our investments allow us to stay up-to-speed with the high velocity of change impacting our profession, and also meet a clear client demand. Recognizing that this requires a thorough approach and dedicated people, we have on top of the technology investments, hired a legal innovation and technology lawyer and have extended our paralegal team to five professionals.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

As explained above, technology is revolutionizing the legal profession and market. Our K law partners, wider network and preferred business partners have understood this already some years ago. As a result of our dedication, investment and people, we are already today presenting our clients with useful and relevant technology driven solutions that work.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

Often we add value by providing our clients with a multidisciplinary solution. For example, not only can we tackle the legal and tax issues, at the same time, we consider the operational or financial consequences of the transaction or restructuring.  From a pure legal perspective, our lawyers have deep technical expertise as well as relevant sector knowledge.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

I strongly believe that our clients want us to be a stable and technology focused law firm which provides them, through highly experienced and acclaimed lawyers, with a client centric approach and with solutions to their problems that work.  As we are part of global multidisciplinary network, our people have a unique perspective that goes beyond considering the legal ramifications of our clients’ issues. We have a broader business outlook that supports our clients by considering  their strategic questions and the wider business implications of our recommendations, without of course, taking management decisions in their place. In three years’ time I hope that K law will still be one of the larger and best law firms in the country from a reputational perspective.
