The firm

Founder Mr Erdem Kaya, who is renowned in Turkish IP practice, has 15 years of experience in all IP aspects, particularly in patent-related issues. Since its founding, the firm has rendered a full range of IP-services from filing to litigation.

The firm changed its name to Erdem, Kaya & Partners after 1 May 2014. Since establishment, two more partners, Mr Sertel Siraci and Mr Murat Gisi, joined the firm.

The team consists of more than 25 experts including: European and Turkish patent attorneys with scientific backgrounds; patent interpreters; trade mark attorneys and attorneys at law. More patent and trade mark attorneys and attorneys at law are expected to join the team in 2015 to meet the increasing demand from domestic and international clients.

Its first office in Bursa opened in 2006. In 2010, the firm moved its main office to Istanbul, where most of its lawyers now reside, while most patent attorneys work in its Bursa office.

The firm has served more than 1,500 esteemed companies, including top Turkish patent and trade mark filers as well as internationally known companies. Almost 70% of clients are domestics clients. Because of this, the firm intensively files overseas applications as many of its domestic clients are global players in their field of activity, enabling the firm to maintain reciprocity with foreign colleagues.

Areas of practice

The firm’s a full-service intellectual property law firm rendering tailored IP services, from filing to litigation as regards patents, utility models, trade marks, industrial designs, licences, unfair competition, domain names and copyrights. The firm is well-qualified to handle cases pertaining to copyright and IT law.

Mr Kaya currently manages the patent department, serving many well-known companies and universities in Turkey. This department handles issues including: patent searches; freedom to operate analysis; patent drafting and prosecutions before the Turkish Patent Institute or European Patent Office. Its qualifications in this field are widely acknowledged in Turkey. The department also effectively supports its in-house lawyers and other firms in patent disputes, regardless of their technical complexity. These technical and legal qualifications are what make the firm unique. Mr Kaya gives seminars and lectures in companies or universities, also sitting on the board of management in one of Turkey’s well known patent unions.

Mr Siraci is an attorney at law with an extensive IP background, with in-depth experience in copyright and IT law, taking part in many initiatives to shape Turkey’s practice in this field. Mr Siraci currently manages the legal department in Erdem, Kaya & Partners. The department engages with any IP dispute and successfully appears before Turkish courts. Mr Siraci also gives lectures in Bar associations, non-governmental organisations and universities.

Mr Soylu, who is a Turkish patent and trademark attorney with a mechanical engineering background, recently joined the firm as a senior partner after successfully managing the IP department of Bosch Turkey for more than ten years. Mr Soylu currently manages a team of patent attorneys handling requests from automotive, machinery and home appliance companies. As a renowned patent attorney in Turkey, he also appeared in several seminars and trainings organised by universities and some IP organisations as well as the Turkish Patent Institute.

Mr Murat Gisi is a registered German patent attorney and European trade mark and design attorney, with software engineering background. Mr Gisi supervises relations with foreign colleagues, aiming to expand the international network.

Ms Ahu Güneyli, a registered attorney at law and Turkish trade mark attorney, joined in 2014 as an associate attorney. Ms Güneyli’s expertise lies in national and international trademark and design prosecutions, domain name disputes before relevant Turkish authorities and international administrative dispute resolution centres, including WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, the Czech Arbitration Court and National Arbitration Forum. She also lectures and speaks at events in the area of her expertise.
