Patrice Grenier, Managing partner

Managing partner Patrice Grenier explains how the firm is adapting to clients’ changing needs

What makes Grenier Avocats different from its competitors?

Grenier Avocats is now known for its expertise in industrial issues, both in France and internationally. Using its industrial risk expertise, Grenier Avocats has also developed a special service aimed at structuring ethical risk prevention. Our consultancy service also differs in that we spend time getting to grips with and understanding our clients’ businesses, environments and processes in order to better anticipate and prevent their risks.

In your opinion, what expertise is likely to be in high demand in the coming months and why?

We are convinced that companies will have to set increasingly high standards with regard to ethical risks, in particular following regulatory changes – as is the case in France with the "SAPIN 2" law. Furthermore we are seeing our consultancy business grow every year because managers are more aware of industrial risks and are therefore asking for earlier upstream reflection and risk prevention training for their team.

What major changes have occurred recently in your business that could benefit your clients?

Our new ethical risk service is essential for our clients and in particular for the sustainability of their businesses. We continue to support major international industrial groups and our ever increasing expertise necessarily benefits all our clients.

I would also like to emphasize the change in our visual identity, which is accompanied by a greater clarity in the messages we wish to deliver, and in particular the values we uphold: independence, transparency, adaptability, competitiveness and responsiveness.

Can you give us one or more examples of major cases you have conducted?

In a defective products case we helped clear a French industrial group in the United States. More concretely, in a class action in which $45m was at stake, we defended a large industrial group. We have also assisted a client in a group accident case resulting from a train derailment.

Where do you see your business going in the next three years?

We have good reason to be confident. Our special expertise is well known. Our team is very experienced and able to work worldwide. We will therefore continue to win new market shares year on year.

  • The new French regulation applying to national insurance contributions for managers and shareholders

French insurance contributions on executive and shareholder remuneration (pay + dividends) have been substantially increased by the National Insurance Funding for 2013 Act, No. 2012-1404, of 17th December 2012. Until 31st December 2012, all dividends were subject to national insurance contributions on unearned income but henceforth, under Article L136-3 of the National Insurance Code, amended by Act No. 2012-1404, certain dividends   are considered as pay received by executives and shareholders and are therefore subject to the national insurance contributions on pay. The Act also abolished the ceiling on health insurance contributions payable by the self-employed and all this means that businesses must rethink the way that they have been structured until now.
