Career

Harry Hirst is a Partner and Master Mariner in the Singapore office. Harry has been practicing in Asia for 23 years and was previously based in the Hong Kong office. His relocation to Singapore underlines the firm’s commitment to Singapore’s growing importance as a maritime center in Asia. He is consistently recognised as a top admiralty specialist by leading legal directories and he is described by Chambers Asia Pacific as ‘one of the best shipping lawyers in Hong Kong’ and ‘one of the very few specialists in Admiralty work’.

Harry has more than twenty five years’ experience advising ship owners, P&I Clubs and hull underwriters on their maritime casualties. A former Deck Officer on tankers ranging from 3,000 to 300,000 tonnes deadweight with Mobil Shipping Company, he speaks and understands the language of mariners and those involved in the industry. He has a holistic understanding of maritime operations and marine investigations.

He specialises in all aspects of maritime casualties involving collision; salvage, total loss and wreck removal; pollution; fire and explosion; cargo shift, loss and damage; and general average. He has been involved in several of the most serious maritime incidents in Asia.

Highlight matters

Twenty-five years of practice in this field cannot be described in every detail but notable recent highlights have included acting in the following cases:

The Hebei Spirit in Korea, described as one of South Korea's worst oil spills ever.

Ocean Victory, one of the largest unsafe port claims of recent times.

The Neftegaz 67 /Yao Hai, a major collision in Hong Kong waters involving complex issues of causation and multiple crew fatalities.

The Trans Summer, the sinking of a cargo ship in typhoon hit waters off Hong Kong.
