Career

Faz is the firm’s Global Head of Shipping and an ex Ship’s Master. He regularly advises CEOs and management teams on complex legal matters, particularly in relation to wet and dry shipping.

Faz is well known for shipping litigation, from collisions, salvage, total losses, groundings and shipboard fires, to general shipping disputes. He is particularly known in the market for his expert advice in the highly charged atmosphere following a maritime casualty. As an ex-tanker man, Faz is also frequently instructed in tanker cargo disputes and contamination claims.

He handled the complex and high-profile Prestige and Costa Concordia incidents. He was also involved in other significant cases such as the serious collision between Corvus J and Baltic Ace, the collision between Maritime Maisie and Gravity Highway and the Stolt Valor explosion.

Faz is regularly instructed on insurance aspects on behalf of Hull underwriters and P&I Clubs on marine insurance matters ranging from H&M, P&I, FD&D, marine and offshore disputes. His experience also encompasses leading an insurance company as CEO, which provided him with an excellent understanding of the industry.

Headline work includes advising oil tanker Alnic MC, and its owner, Energetic Tank, in connection with a major collision that occurred between it and a U.S. Navy destroyer; representing Great Eastern Shipping and North of England P&I Club in $30m proceedings in the UAE and London as a result of  a collision of an LNG carrier and another tanker in the Gulf of Oman; and representing Teekay LNG Partners on a $110m case involving the termination of six long-term bare boat charters and the repossession of the vessels.  The team also represented Gard in a high-profile $170m unsafe port claim, the Ocean Victory. Key figures include global shipping head Faz Peermohamed, who has ‘fantastic experience’; Michael Volikas, who handles commercial disputes for shipping sector clients; Ian Chetwood, who handles contentious wet and dry work; Christian Dwyer, who is global head of the firm’s admiralty and casualty response team; ‘first-rate’ litigator Jeremy Biggs; and Will Marshall, who is global head of trade. Also noted are Duncan Bateson, who advises on superyachts and commercial shipping mandates, Simon Spark, Fionna Gavin and Chris Kidd. Paul Herring has relocated to the firm's Piraeus office, while Kevin Cooper has joined MFB, David Richards has joined The North of England P&I Association and Jonathan Elvey has left the firm.
