Position

Reinsurance and insurance specialist. International practice places a particular emphasis on litigation which affects the London market and its counterparts abroad; also handles a wide variety of work including treaty reinsurance, marine and aviation disputes; work in recent years includes major reinsurance issues arising from matters as diverse as the PA spiral, Unicover and US workmen’s compensation claims and pension misselling; a number of cases handled have determined issues of wide-ranging importance, including the House of Lords decision in Pan Atlantic v Pine Top (which resolved a long running controversy concerning the duty of disclosure), and PCW Syndicates v PCW Reinsurers (imputation of knowledge of a fraudulent agent).

Career

Career: Joined Ince & Co 1977, after gaining market experience as post-graduate recruit with a major Lloyd’s broker; qualified 1979; partner 1982; chairman of the firm’s insurance business group; appointed senior partner May 2000 and stepped down March 2008.

The main statutes relating to employment are the Portuguese Employment Code (approved by Law 7/2009 of 12 February 2009) and the Regulation of the Employment Code (Law 35/2004 of 29 July 2004) which is still in force notwithstanding the fact that parts have been revoked with the entry into force of the new Employment Code.
