Ian is head of our Monaco office and focuses on dispute resolution. He has a broad and varied practice covering many areas of the firm’s work, with a particular emphasis on dry shipping, international trade and commodities, energy and offshore and yachts.

Ian regularly advises a number of the world's largest owners, charterers, traders and their P&I and FD&D insurers on both dry and wet shipping issues with a particular emphasis on charterparty disputes, carriage of goods by sea, sale & purchase of new and second hand tonnage (both contentious and non-contentious) and newbuilding contracts. In the marine and non-marine markets, Ian acts for brokers, insurers and reinsurers.

Energy

Ian is very experienced in the energy sector and acts for a number of large energy operators and contractors. He has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating contracts and in resolving disputes in connection with oil & gas supply, storage and transportation, offshore construction, shipbuilding, FSOs, FPSOs, offshore pipelines and other facilities. 

He regularly advises on the construction, employment and operation of offshore production units and he has successfully dealt with a number of large-scale offshore construction disputes relating to issues involving design, change orders, cost and time overruns and warranty claims. 

Ian regularly assists his contracting clients with the drafting and negotiation of EPC and EPIC contracts for FSO and FPSO projects and he has also drafted a number of bespoke turnkey supply and FEED contracts. 

International trade

Ian's international trade practice ranges from oil & gas trading to dry commodities, including advice on physical and paper contracts, FFAs, and the conduct of litigation, arbitration and ADR. Ian acts for many major international trading companies, handling disputes involving all areas of their businesses.

Ian regularly advises on all aspects of international trade transactions including the sale, transportation and financing, the insurance and hedging of coal, steel, metals, soft commodities, crude oil, refined petroleum products and gas and handles related disputes ranging from contamination, shortage and late delivery claims to hedging issues. In addition, he has drafted a number of different types of sale, off-take, storage contracts and joint venture agreements and he has advised his trader clients on their onshore and offshore corporate structures. The Legal 500 recognises Ian as a “notable member” of our International Trade and Commodities team.
