Managing Partner Gelu Maravela explains the link between consistency and success

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Maravela & Asociații from your competitors?

It is in fact a mix of balanced elements that helps us stand out, composed of undisputed quality of service, sound experience, deep understanding of our clients` needs, prompt feedback and last but not least, a team with great expertise and personal qualities that handle our portfolio. Being consistent in keeping this mix with every single client and mandate is what led us to spectacular results in a relatively short time (including two-digit yearly growth and Law Firm of the Year: Romania title won at The Lawyer European Awards 2017).

Which practises do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

M&A, Real estate and Greenfield projects are most likely to have an increased volume of activity in the coming year. Besides the slight local increase in the purchasing power, investments seem to have unfrozen, banks have less reluctance when granting loans thus shaping the business landscape in friendlier colours. In addition, several predicted exits from the Romanian market are equally drivers for the aforementioned areas' growth.

What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

We have not changed much since our establishment in 2013, we have been persistent and soundly implemented our values, remaining a one-stop-shop for legal, tax and insolvency fast paced quality services, in an involved and flexible manner.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Very much so. Besides broadened access to permanently updated information, state of the art applications and devices, technology eased the cross-border nature of our multidisciplinary services provided.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

We implemented, for one of our clients, leading financial services provider in the automotive sector, a very accurate system of risk analysis and an early warning signs detector regarding the solvability of their commercial partners and clients alike, in close relationship with relevant authorities (Ministry of Finance and Trade Registry), radically improving their business.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms? - where do you see the firm in three years time?

They most certainly do and testimony stands our 99.9% retention rate, alongside our continuous portfolio expansion, with mostly large multinational privately held companies. In three years’ time we aim to be in top-five Romanian business law firms. Might seem audacious, but courage was one of our assets to begin with.
