It saw the addition of Eric Mayer, who joined from Pohlmann & Company in December 2017; he advised Vetter Pharma on the further development of a compliance management system. He also assisted Statkraft with compliance risk analyses for various pilot projects. Together with Christian Schmidt, Mayer heads the practice group, which includes counsel Gerhard Gündel as well as Harald Feiler, who was recently also appointed counsel.

Co-practice head Petra Eckl is regularly instructed by fund managers and assists clients with the establishment of tax-efficient holding structures. ‘Pleasant’ co-director Dirk Koch provides ‘time-efficient and high-quality analyses and recommendations for action’ and understands the importance of ‘communicating these comprehensibly’. The team at GSK Stockmann is jointly led by Munich-based partners Robert Kramer and Timo Bernau and handles a wide range of regulatory matters including those concerning digital payments, crowdfunding, the EU capital markets union and Brexit alongside capital and liquidity requirements, while also providing transactional assistance. In conjunction with its corporate team, Peter Scherer continues to advise a client on regulatory matters pertaining to bitcoins, which includes licensing proceedings before BaFin, and a securities and forex trading house on German Securities Trading Act (WpHG) and German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (WpÜG) requirements for share transactions. A credit card interest group receives regular advice on various banking supervisory law and bank contract law issues including the implementation of PSD 2 and the German Payment Services Supervision Act, which was provided by Markus Escher and local partner Daniela Eschenlohr. Munich-based Oliver Glück and Frankfurt-based Harald Feiler, who was appointed counsel in January 2018, are other key members of the team. In January 2019, fintech expert Tobias Riethmüller rejoined the firm from Schiedermair Rechtsanwälte.

GSK Stockmann frequently handles fund structuring work for investors and asset management clients and has particular expertise in real estate funds but the team is also well versed in private equity and securities funds. Capital management companies also instruct the team to assist with the implementation of the investment tax reform, the amended anti-money laundering regulation and MiFID II. With Robert Kramer in the lead, the practice advised LaSalle Investment Management on investment and tax law matters pertaining to the structuring of a close-end special AIF for the acquisition of real estate in Bonn, and assisted DF Deutsche Finance Investment with investment, insurance supervisory law and tax law issues arising from the acquisition of real estate-based equity investments. Allianz Global Investors and Allianz Capital Partners are also clients. Harald Feiler was appointed counsel in early 2018.

GSK Stockmann’s IT practice increasingly focuses on topics regarding the digitalisation and automisation of business divisions with particular expertise in fintech and the automotive industry. It also advises on transactions and disputes. Key figure Jörg Kahler regularly acts for IT service provider Datagroup in contract negotiations for various IT projects. He also represented Ryanair in disputes concerning unauthorised key word advertising (Ad-Words) and unauthorised domain use. Aptiv (formerly Delphi Automotive Systems) sought the team’s advice on a tender procedure for the acquisition of the tech subsidiary of a German corporation, which developed technology for autonomous driving. Clients also include start-ups, such as Jodel Venture, and an anonymous messenger service, which the team advised on its business model, including legal, digitalisation and technology-related questions. Other clients include an online platform start-up in the area of gift items and a fintech company involved in innovative payment handling and credit rating matters.

Key focus areas of the 23-lawyer strong environment and planning group at GSK Stockmann continue to be construction and planning law advice for real estate and infrastructure projects, but the firm is also experienced in environmental law issues such as emission protection. In a recent highlight, Mark Butt led advice to Bayerische Versorgungskammer on the procurement of building rights for two major projects in Munich. Berlin-based Jan Hennig led the assistance to Ikea with building and planning law issues as well as the project development of a new furniture store in Karlsruhe. Andreas Geiger advised DB Station & Service on the redesign of Munich’s main railway station. Deutsche Bahn, Hammer Unternehmensgruppe and the state of Berlin are also part of the client portfolio. The team was strengthened in May 2017 by the addition of of counsel Alfred Gangel, who previously worked in the public sector. In September 2017, of counsel Ulrich Battis joined the firm from Gleiss Lutz.

Following of counsel Ulrich Battis’ arrival in September 2017 from Gleiss Lutz, GSK Stockmann’s procurement practice was further strengthened in July 2018 by the arrival of Arne Gniechwitz and his team from KPMG Germany. The group, which now includes four partners, continues to focus on the areas of real estate and healthcare. Practice head Jenny Mehlitz recently advised the state of Saxony-Anhalt on the procurement law aspects of the procurement of a laboratory building. The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) instructed the group to assist with the implementation of a consultancy services tender procedure. Hendrik Stamm left for Lutz Abel Rechtsanwalts PartG mbB in 2018.

Praised for its ‘sound economic understanding combined with a high level of legal expertise’, GSK Stockmann received several new project work instructions in the building construction, infrastructure and plant engineering sectors. Oda Wedemeyer provided advice to pwr development on planning law and various construction law matters pertaining to the Tetris project in Berlin’s former Tacheles area. Jan Kehrberg, who jointly heads the practice with Mark Butt, assisted Investa Group and Baywobau with the development of a conversion area in Berlin. The group also regularly advises MV Werften Rostock Property on all matters concerning the renovation and expansion of production facilities. Oliver Koos was made up to partner in early 2018.

The team, which is led by Dirk Brückner, focuses on real estate transactions and project development work, particularly with regards to the hotel, nursing homes, logistics and retail asset classes, and increased its bench strength in March 2018 by adding Johann Rumetsch from Herbert Smith Freehills Germany LLP, while, in January of the same year, the ‘quick and proactive’ Christoph Strelczyk was made partner. Rainer Werum advised Corestate Capital Transactions on the acquisition of five project developments by way of a forward asset deal worth €600m and assisted Deka Immobilien Investment and real estate investment trust WestInvest Gesellschaft für Investmentfonds with the acquisition of high-rise office Tower 185 in Frankfurt am Main. Monique Franke advised Swiss Life on matters pertaining to the acquisition of a retail portfolio.

GSK Stockmann is a trusted adviser of board members of large corporations, clients from the construction and real estate industries, and family businesses, among others, due to its expertise in real estate law, litigation and non-performing transactions. A highlight was assisting Frank Gebert, chairman of the board of the kitchen group Alno, with the enforcement of pension claims against the insolvency administration. The group also advised an airline on the planned takeover of assets from another insolvent airline. It also advised Starlinger on the acquisition of insolvent mechanical engineering company Maplan. The team is led by Andreas Dimmling and Raoul Kreide.
