Career

Gary is head of Al Tamimi & Company’s Corporate and Commercial Department. Gary is a highly experienced corporate lawyer
who has practised in both advisory and transactional settings for more than 20 years.

In Australia, Gary was the senior corporate partner for a regional Australian law firm (Fisher Jeffries) serving corporate and institutional clients. Gary served as Chairman of the Law Council of Australia’s peak technical committee on corporate law
matters and as a member of the Australian Government’s Takeovers Panel. He was also a member of the statutory advisory committee advising the Australian Government on the reform of corporate and securities law.

Gary has practised in the UAE since 2006. Gary has particular expertise in structuring issues for corporate groups operating throughout the GCC/MENA countries and is an expert in directors’ duties, corporate governance, shareholder rights (both listed
and family companies) and corporate trusts.

Gary’s experience in the Gulf region includes major acquisitions, IPOs, due diligence enquiries, corporate restructurings and
complex private equity agreements.

Gary has advised some of the largest family companies in the Middle East and the wider MENA region on their legal structures and regularly drafts “tailor-made” and comprehensive Family Constitutions for major family groups in the region.

Al Tamimi & Company has a reputation for handling the technical points of onshore UAE law and is frequently sought out to handle this aspect of agenda-setting global deals. James MacCallum spearheaded a multi-office team made up of practitioners from across the the region, working with Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, to advise on General Electric's sale of its global water business; MacCullum also assisted the same referring law firm and lay client with the sale of its industrial solutions business to ABB. Other work for MacCallum included acting as main transaction counsel to Star Satellite Telecommunications, a subsidiary of Yahsat, on purchasing satellite phone business Thuraya. Alex Saleh advised Shuaa Capital on a part-purchase of Amwal Investment. Dubai office managing partner Husam Hourani acted for Emaar on the spin-off of its development arm, which was subsequently listed on the Dubai Financial Market. Izabella Szadkowska, who is qualified in New Zealand, is a key contact for restructuring mandates. Samer Qudah is the firm's head of corporate structuring. Other key contacts include corporate and commercial head Gary Watts and Ali Bachrouch, who heads the firm's Northern Emirates corporate practice from Sharjah. The firm also has an office in Ras Al Khaimah. Abdullah Mutawi is a new hire from Baker Botts L.L.P..
