The firm

Senguler & Senguler dates back to 1995 and is the successor to the UK law firm Ledingham Chalmers’ Turkish office. In 2004 Jonathan Blythe, who set up Ledingham Chalmers, acquired the business with named partner Selcuk Senguler. From being a specialist in oil and gas, the firm expanded to become one of the leading legal advisors to a whole range of foreign investors entering Turkey. The growth of the firm, from five lawyers to nearly 20, reflects the diversity of business which covers a full range of services from dispute resolution and all aspects of commercial law. The firm has three partners: Jonathan Blythe, Baris Polat and Gul Senguler.

Areas of practice

Much of Senguler & Senguler’s work is with multinational companies. Business usually arrives via referrals from happy clients or the excellent relationships the firm has with several international or global law firms and networks. The firm maintains its strong capability in energy and resources law, and acts for a number of players in the Turkish mining and oil and gas sectors. However, renewable energy has also become a sector in which the firm has developed its skills. Nihan Uslu Yigit heads the energy work assisted by partner Jonathan Blythe. The firm has a very strong corporate and commercial team which handles both day-to-day corporate matters and M&A transactions. In particular, Senguler & Senguler has recently advised the legendary funder of Google and Facebook on a new investment in a rising Turkish tech company. Partner Baris Polat heads the firm’s corporate work. The banking sector is another area of recognised expertise, and in particular card services, where the firm represents the largest US and Chinese players. Hospitality has become one of the firm’s niche areas and it supports a number of international hotel chain clients, and Baris Polat also heads work in this area. One of the firm’s clients recently named Senguler & Senguler as their top European service provider for 2017. In the last two years, the firm has developed its bulk labour law litigation capability, providing tailored support for large employers with challenging labour law case loads. Auditing reporting, training and focused management of cases has led to savings and better risk management. Gul Senguler leads the litigation team.
