Its partners gained experience in major Cypriot law firms and had their own established law offices (Dimitris Papadopoulos and Associates and C. & D. Lycourgos) before launching the fully integrated merged firm P.L. & Co.

Areas of practice

Corporate, tax, capital markets and securities: the firm handles corporate matters such as the incorporation of Cyprus companies, the setting up of branches of Cypriot and foreign companies, advice on double tax treaties which Cyprus has ratified with other countries and the overall governance of corporate structures. The firm also handles complicated corporate and commercial law matters like giving legal opinions, drafting tailor-made memorandums and articles of association, shareholders’ agreements, commercial agreements and planning sophisticated corporate and tax structures. Mergers and acquisitions work is co-ordinated by the corporate and tax partners, in collaboration with other associates for specific issues. The services of tax advice, tax planning and litigation concern international and domestic aspects of company tax, income tax and VAT. The firm is involved in all the preparatory work with regard to the flotation of public companies on the Cyprus Stock Exchange and advises companies on the preparation of prospectuses and on the relevant regulatory framework with regard to a public issue of any kind of securities. The firm is also involved in incorporating companies and providing domiciliation, secretarial and other related services to companies belonging to non-resident clients.

Litigation and arbitration: the firm’s work includes serious commercial litigation, international contracts, injunctions, insurance and tort claims, interim measures, seizure procedures and measures against counterfeiting. The firm has developed a substantial practice in handling complicated commercial litigation which often involves transnational litigation action and obtaining worldwide freezing court orders.

Commercial transactions and intellectual property: the firm deals with national and international business transactions such as commercial contracts, sale of business, distribution, agency, licensing, and franchising. The firm also handles the protection and licensing of technology, computer software, multimedia and the internet.

Trusts: the firm is experienced in setting up local and international trusts for family settlements and asset protection.

Immovable property: the firm advises local and foreign clients, including several of the major companies involved in the real estate business in Cyprus, on all aspects of acquisition, and sale and securitisation of immovable property in Cyprus, drafting contracts and securing the necessary permits for the acquisition of immovable property. Furthermore it advises on and drafts lease contracts as well as complicated contracts of land developing.

Banking and finance: the firm has a substantial activity and experience in advising banks on banking regulations, bankers’ duties, securities of debts, drafting and reviewing loan agreements, and international credit facilities.

Tourist law: the firm advises one of the leaders of the tourism activity in Cyprus with regards to travel agency law, law relating to aviation, package travel regulation and hotel liabilities and regulations.
