AstapovLawyers' Senior Associate Ivan Lishchyna spoke at the press conference on Challenges and Opportunities of the Pro Bono Activities Development in Ukraine organized by the Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation. The event took place as part of the Fourth All-Ukrainian Day of Pro Bono on 16 May 2013 in the press center of the Ukrainian national information agency Ukrinform.

The speakers of the event included Mykola Sioma, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation, Maksym Shcherbatiuk, Program Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, and Ivan Lishchyna, Senior Associate of AstapovLawyers International Law Group.

During his welcome speech Mr Sioma has defined the principal missions of the Foundation for 2013, as well as announced the opportunity for all citizens to receive legal aid on the free-of-charge basis in all Ukrainian regions during the All-Ukrainian Pro Bono Day on 23 May 2013. He has given a presentation of the Pro Bono Exchange Market website (http://pro-bono.in.ua) aimed at promotion and development of pro bono activities in Ukraine and assistance in providing the legal aid for the susceptible groups of society.

Mr Shcherbatiuk spoke about the strategic cases that are currently in progress at the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the Union and the law firms in order to boost the cases that are of key importance and value in reforming the Ukrainian legal system and closing the gaps that contribute to the breach of human rights. He added that such cooperation is the best instrument for solving the systematic problems that occur due to the inadequate legal provisions or lack of any provisions at all.

Ivan Lishchyna discussed the possibilities of corporate social responsibility of law firms by the example of AstapovLawyers pro bono activities. He told about the company's cooperation with the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union on strategic human rights violation cases, particularly speaking about three cases that are currently handled by AstapovLawyers' Human Rights Team. He also mentioned that the firm is active in the following pro bono directions: supporting moot courts as well as the teams participating in them, providing legal assistance to the National Ukrainian Fencing Team in competitions and at the Olympics and providing aid to charity funds.

"Pro bono activity is the key element of our corporate social responsibility program. A successful law firm is the one that, inter alia, takes good care of those people, who can't afford sound and high-quality legal assistance. We contribute to the development of our legal system and civilized society by helping these people. The protection of the human rights is the focus of our activity in this sphere," added Ivan Lishchyna.
