Oleh Beketov spoke at International Law Forum IX

October 2010

AstapovLawyers Counsel Oleh Beketov delivered a speech at International Law Forum IX taking place in Yalta from October 1 to 4, 2010. The forum involved managers of international and local law firms, legal practitioners and advocates, heads of major companies' legal departments, and representatives of CIS countries' state executive and judicial authorities. The forum considered various issues regarding the judicial practice in resolving economic disputes, effective legal technologies of debt collection in the crisis environment, the reorganization of Ukrainian joint-stock companies into private and public, and so on.

Mr. Beketov spoke about the recognition and enforcement of Ukrainian court judgments abroad. Particularly covered were the recognition and enforcement of Ukrainian court judgments subject to international law agreements (such as the Minsk Convention and the Kyiv Agreement) and in accordance with laws of individual countries (England, USA, Australia, Canada) and the international law principle of reciprocity.

"The Yalta Law Forum is one of the most important events in the post-Soviet law area. The forum offers a perfect chance to see colleagues from the former USSR republics and share ideas and legal practice experience. It is always interesting to know how each of the CIS countries develops its legislation and what novelties and challenges exist in the systems of law our partners from those countries deal with," noted AstapovLawyers Counsel Oleh Beketov.

  • How much does it cost to use ‚Äúproprietary‚ÄĚ TM?

For many international companies, it is a common practice to allow the use of their trademarks (TM) to all group companies on a free of charge basis. Some parent companies do not even have a right to charge the royalty payments from their subsidiaries, as this contradicts the company’s policy. In the case of subsidiaries located in the territory of Ukraine, such a situation suits everyone, at first glance, because royalties do not have to be paid at all.
