Ivan Lishchyna conducted training for the Crimea-based judges

September 2010

On September 15, 2010, Ivan Lishchyna, a Senior Associate of the AstapovLawyers' International Arbitration and Litigation Practice, conducted training for the Crimea-based judges as a part of the International Standards of Judicial Practice seminar organized by the Kharkiv Human Rights Group under the auspices of the European Commission and Democracy Fund of the US Embassy.

Ivan Lishchyna briefed the seminar attendees on the general requirements to a fair and public hearing in the context of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms to the extent that everyone is entitled to impartial trial and hearing within a reasonable time, accessible justice, and enforceable judgement, and that a lawful judgment may not be cancelled without good reasons. Mr. Lishchyna noted that Article 17 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Enforcement and Application of Judgments and Practice of the European Court of Human Rights" provides that ECHR judgments constitute a source of law for Ukrainian judges, therefore its highly important for judges to understand how to apply the standards of fair justice established by the court to their work in Ukraine.

Ivan Lishchyna worked for the European Court of Human Rights Secretariat as a lawyer for six years. He has deep knowledge of the work procedures and practice of the European Court of Human Rights.
