California top lawyer and arbitration expert Robert Wachter joins the team of Graf & Pitkowitz
Robert Wachter (41), an American attorney from California, has moved from Korea to Austria and has joined the international arbitration group at Graf & Pitkowitz Attorneys-at-Law in Vienna.
Mr. Wachter was the valedictorian of his law school class at the University of Hawaii, and the co-editor-in-chief of the University of Hawaii Law Review. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California at San Diego, where he graduated summa cum laude.
Mr. Wachter began his legal career in Hawaii, where he was a law clerk to the Honorable Samuel P. King, Chief Judge Emeritus of the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii. He spent six years as a real estate and project finance attorney at O’Melveny & Myers LLP before moving to Korea in 2004. He joined the Yulchon law firm in 2005 and became a founding member of the firm’s international arbitration practice group. He was the first person without any Korean heritage to become a partner at the firm.
“Mr. Wachter’s experience both in Asia and the United States gives us a major competitive advantage,” explained Dr. Nikolaus Pitkowitz, a founding partner at Graf & Pitkowitz. “The long term trend points to increased trade and investment between Europe and Asia. This is especially true with the new EU-Korea free trade agreement. As our practice becomes more globalized, we strive to attract the best lawyers who have training in different legal systems and who have substantial international experience.”
Dr. Nikolaus Pitkowitz leads the international arbitration practice group at Graf & Pitkowitz. The firm has acted as counsel in many high value complex international arbitration cases, including the largest arbitration ever in Austria, with an amount in dispute well over €2 billion. Dr. Pitkowitz was distinguished, amongst other things, by Corporate Intl magazine, with the global Award 2011 “Arbitration lawyer of the year in Austria”. Nikolaus Pitkowitz is vice-president of the VIAC (Vienna International Arbitration Court) and and an international arbitrator at the prominent international arbitration institutions such as HKIAC (Hong Kong), SIAC (Singapore) and CIETAC (China).
Graf & Pitkowitz has approximately 50 employees and cares for numerous mandates at home and abroad in issues relating to commercial law.
