Penkov, Markov&Partners Host FLI NET Central and South Eastern Europe Business Development Power Day

November 2011

Representatives of the FLI NET member firms from the region of Central and South Eastern Europe held a meeting on the new premises of Penkov, Markov & Partners - Attorneys at Law in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 2 November 2011. The guests at the meeting included the FLI Principal, Mr Orlando J Casares, colleagues from Turkey, Greece and Serbia, as well as representatives of Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Hungary.

The meeting opened with introductory remarks from the firm’s Managing Partner, Mr Vladimir Penkov, and from Mr Casares, who welcomed the guests. Within the framework of the event, the hosts – Penkov, Markov & Partners – introduced the participants to the top priorities and matters of principle in the work of the firm and made presentations on the tax treatment and the investment climate in Bulgaria and the peculiarities of investments in infrastructure, energy and renewable energy sources.

On the basis of the subjects covered in the presentations, the participants discussed investment opportunities in Central and South Eastern Europe, as well as the prospects opening up to FLI NET member firms to strengthen intra-network co-operation so as to attract new clients.

Following the business part of the programme, the guests had an opportunity to enjoy Sofia’s landmarks during a professionally guided tour, organised by the hosts, and found the visit to the Boyana Church particularly fascinating. At the end of the day, the participants attended a dinner at Restaurant ‘Moderato’.

  • Why Don’t We Have the Will to Improve the Investment Climate?

All investors, especially those from abroad, when asked about the investment climate in the country indicate a number of factors, besides tax rate, that influence their overall assessment. These factors relate to different areas of business and life in general, but have so far unfortunately gone unnoticed by governments.
