The firm

The firm was founded in Athens in 1955 by Agis Metaxopoulos and was known as A. Metaxopoulos Law Offices until 2005 when it took its current form. From the very outset the firm began to grow and soon became established as one of the most specialised boutique law firms in Greece with an international reputation, handling intellectual and industrial property law matters as well as entertainment and mass media law issues, along with its strong corporate/commercial practice and its distinguished dispute resolution department. Following its radical restructure and reorganisation in 2007, the firm experienced a substantial and remarkable growth by strengthening its links with its traditional clients and gaining new clients, both foreign and Greek, in all areas of law. The firm consists of a dynamic team of selected professionals, led by its managing partner, Mr Kriton Metaxopoulos, who maintained and expanded its high-profile clientele. The firm consists of ten fee-earners and is supported by a network of associated law firms and counsels across Greece who offer full support to its clients.

Areas of practice

The firm’s areas of expertise include intellectual and industrial property law, advertising and media law, dispute resolution, corporate law, international white-collar crime, European law, civil, labour and aviation laws. The firm is considered to be one of the top IP/TMT/patent law firms in Greece. Kriton Metaxopoulos connected his name with the first ever (1997) European prohibition of legal parallel imports of DVDs which was adopted in 2010 by ECJ decisions which are still applied today by local courts in EU member states. He is also known for his involvement in audiovisual censorship cases (Alexander the Great, Last Temptation of Christ) and succeeded in establishing solid case law in favour of the freedom of ‘viewing’ audiovisual works. He also represents a Greek client in a very complex DVD patent law case in Germany and the Greek Supreme court with extremely favourable results for the client.

Today, the firm represents a variety of international and domestic companies, including one of the largest Greek groups of companies in the entertainment industry, record labels, film distribution companies, producers and studios, Greek radio stations, international publishing companies etc. The firm also has a vast expertise in patents and trade marks as well as telecoms, advertisement, e-commerce and data protection law and it has acted as legal advisors in disputes and corporate matters for high-net-worth individuals and major foreign clients. The firm’s philosophy, in few words, is that all cases, whether legally simple or complex, need a strategic approach adjusted to the client’s needs and goals.
