Types of work undertaken: Arbitration, litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR): the firm has expertise in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious work, often with an international dimension. Work includes litigation in: commercial disputes, banking, insolvencies, shipping, property and professional negligence. The practice is heavily involved in mediations, arbitrations and ADR.

Banking and finance: the group advises clients on transactions and business within the UK and on cross-border, international and emerging markets activities. Specialist expertise includes: bank lending, structured trade finance, corporate and acquisition finance, asset finance and leasing, project finance, real estate finance, energy and natural resources finance, retail banking and consumer finance, cards and payments, debt and equity capital markets, and derivatives.

Betting and gaming: the team is experienced in the interactive and online gaming field, as well as more traditional areas such as casinos and betting agencies. The lawyers advise on both licensing and regulatory issues, as well as corporate and commercial transactions.

Corporate: the practice provides corporate finance, private equity, leveraged buyouts and general commercial advice to UK and international clients. Principal areas of practice include M&A, equity securities, AIM and main market IPOs, joint ventures, corporate structures and governance.

Emerging markets: having pioneered the provision of legal services in emerging markets such as the CIS and CEE, the firm advises on debt and equity transactions, credit facilities, municipal infrastructure finance, projects, trade finance, and formation of cross-border investment funds in emerging markets around the world.

Employment: the group provides labour law, pensions and benefits advice. In addition, the team advises on expatriate arrangements, employment practice, policy and training programmes, as well as compliance audits.

Real estate: the team is experienced in all sectors of commercial real estate, including offices, retail and industrial premises, business centres, hotels and leisure complexes, plus residential real estate for development and investment purposes. The team works across the industry, focusing on providing solutions to the complex legal issues that are a feature of this sector.

Reorganisation, restructuring and insolvency: the team established its reputation in the turnaround market but has extensive experience in advising on insolvencies across sectors that include manufacturing, real estate, retail, automotive, information technology, hotels, hospitals and nursing homes. The practice acts on behalf of accountancy and other law firms. It has a particular focus on the issues affecting the banking, finance and asset lending markets.

  • Changes in the Waste Management System

    The amendments adopted by the Parliament on July 1, 2011 to the Municipal Cleanliness and Tidiness Act bring revolutionary changes to the Polish waste management system. The Act is currently awaiting signing by the President. Once approved, the changes will become effective 12 months from the date the Act is published.

  • COUNCIL TAX

    In Harrow LBC v Ayiku [2012] EWHC 1200 (Admin) Sales J held that the word “or” in the Council Tax (Exempt Dwellings) Order 1992, art 3 Class N, had a disjunctive meaning, therefore it was sufficient for the non-British spouse of a foreign student to satisfy one or other of the two conditions, namely being prevented from taking paid employment or being prevented from claiming benefits, in order to qualify as a “relevant person” who was exempted from liability to pay council tax.

    In R (Calver) v Adjudication Panel for Wales [2012] EWHC 1172 (Admin) Mr Calver was a member of Manorbier Community Council who successfully challenged the decision of the Panel to dismiss his appeal against a decision by Prembrokeshire County Council Standards Committee censuring him for a number of comments or blogs posted by him on a website he owned and controlled.

  • Judicial Review

    The Judgment of Lindblom J in The Manydown Co Ltd v Basingstoke and Deane BC [2012] EWHC 977 (Admin) repays attention. The Claimant sought to challenge by judicial review 2 decisions of the Council: (1) the Council’s refusal to reconsider its position on the development of a site that it owns (and is the subject matter of a Joint Development Partnership Agreement with the Claimant); and (2) a decision of the Council’s Cabinet approving a selection of sites for development which did not include this site.
