I have been specialising as a Solicitor in the area of family law for over thirty years. I am very glad to have this opportunity to make a few brief comments and observations about the breakdown of marriages and other relationships.

David Phelan has been appointed as our new managing partner. We have appointed two new partners to our healthcare team, Louise O’Rourke who has been part of our team for five years and Mary Hough, who joins us as a partner.

Hayes solicitors were delighted to welcome Contact After Retirement (C.A.R.) to a seminar at their offices on 17 February 2011. The focus of the Seminar was on the importance of putting ones affairs in order and the reason why one should consider making a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Living Will. The Seminar also focused on how Separation and Divorce can have an effect on the distribution of assets after your death.

The Working Group on Medical Negligence and Periodic Payments, which includes Ciaran O’Rorke, head of the Hayes solicitors’ Healthcare team, published the first part of its report earlier this week.

Hayes solicitors represented Donal Kinsella in his recent landmark jury award against Kenmare Resources plc and its chairman. The award was made after a 6 day High Court trial and standing at €10,000,000 it exceeds the previous record jury award in this jurisdiction by more than 5 times.

Deirdre McCarthy was invited to speak at the VTE National Symposium on 16 September 2010 organised by Covidien.

A recent Supreme Court decision has offered some insight into the law on the restriction of company directors by the Courts. The decision is particularly helpful as it addresses the differing roles of executive and non-executive directors, the type of conduct which will be classed as “irresponsible” in the conduct of the affairs of a company in financial difficulty and the need for the law to apply to the particular circumstances at issue.

On 20 October next in Dublin, Hayes solicitors will co-host with UK law firm Short Richardson Forth and Legal Island a practically focussed seminar on the theme of Transfer Regulations and related legal developments. The recession has triggered a substantial escalation in the number of disputes arising connected to the Transfer Regulations. This seminar will focus on the legal issues giving rise to those disputes and possible commercial and legal solutions that may be applied in resolving such disputes

HAYES ACTS FOR IRISH TIMES EDITOR GERALDINE KENNEDY AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT COLM KEENA IN LANDMARK SUPREME COURT CASE

Hayes solicitors were delighted to participate in the Irish College of General Practitioners Third Annual Summer School which took place at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny between the 23rd and 26th June 2009.

Hayes solicitors are delighted to be associated with the Diploma in Forensic Accounting run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ireland. The course is designed to provide participants with the core skills and knowledge required to undertake forensic accounting assignments. Solicitors from Hayes lecture students throughout the annual programme on various legal issues.

First Law organised a debate on 1st October 2009 on the motion "Is Jail the Way to Go After DPP v Duffy?". David Phelan, partner Hayes solicitors was one of the invited speakers.

Hayes solicitors were delighted to participate in the Irish College of General Practitioners Certificate course in Geriatric Medicine which took place at the IMI Conference Centre on 02 October 2009.

Hayes solicitors were delighted to give a commercial law seminar to members of the Smalls Firms Association on 19th October 2009.
