Position

Alex Haffner is a partner in the corporate department at Fladgate.

He specialises in competition, regulatory and commercial law matters. He also advises many start-up/growth companies on their legal requirements and in obtaining outside investment to grow their businesses.

Alex acts for clients across a wide range of industries, most notably those in the technology, media, telecoms, sports and retail sectors.  Alex has a very international practice, with a particular focus on China, the Middle East and North America.

He has significant experience dealing with the UK, EU and international competition authorities and courts. He has been involved in several ground breaking cases including the English Premier League’s settlement of its long-running investigation by the EU Commission, the first ever successful leniency application to the Office of Fair Trading (now the CMA) in the Hasbro case, and successful merger clearance applications for companies including Total, General Mills, Flextronics and Mitsui.

Alex’s commercial work has involved negotiating and drafting agreements for various sports rights holders and broadcasters, various mobile and technology companies, as well as corporates in various other sectors.

Alex is a board member of the Association for Interactive Media and Micropayments and sits on the editorial board of LawinSport.

He is recognised by the legal directories; the Legal 500 has commented that he is “always willing to go the extra mile for his clients”.

Outside work, Alex acts as a mentor to schoolchildren thinking of taking up a career in the law.

Fladgate LLP's 'first-class team' provides the full spectrum of commercial contracts advice to broadcasters, hotel owners and operators, universities and sports governing bodies (national and international), among a broad base of clients. Team head Eddie Powell combines commercial contracts expertise with knowledge about related intellectual property, technology and competition law issues; his varied work includes technology transactions (such as IT procurement, supply and development), manufacturing arrangements and licensing agreements. In a recent highlight, Powell and Alex Haffner (an addition from Dentons in 2017) acted for Glorious Brands Limited in the negotiation of an exclusive distribution agreement with US-based Astral Brands Inc for the distribution in the UK and Ireland of beauty products under the PUR brand. In addition, Haffner advised Mermaid Conferences & Events Limited on an agreement with White Light Limited (WLL) for WLL to provide audio-visual and other services to customers using the Mermaid Centre in central London. Also recommended are Alan Wetterhahn, James Earl, Jan Hoppe (a recent hire from Gordon Dadds LLP) and senior associate David Quinlan.

Fladgate LLP's growing practice frequently handles athletics, boxing and cricket as well as football, and counts event management, commercial rights deals and corporate matters as particular strengths. Group head James Earl acted for London 2017 on corporate governance, funding agreements, insurance issues and regulatory matters relating to its delivery of the IAAF World Athletics and Para Athletic Championships. He also advised Sponserve on licensing agreements, including with the Premier League, regarding a new software solution to help clubs and governing bodies manage and deliver their sponsorship assets. In July 2017 the department welcomed competition expert Alex Haffner from Dentons; he brought with him clients such as the ECB, which he advised on selling broadcast rights in Africa to Econet.
