Soffia Eydis Bjorgvinsdottir, director of KPMG Law ehf., discusses how the firm is adapting to clients’ changing needs

What do you see as the main points that differentiate KPMG Law ehf from your competitors?

Our strong suit is our knowledge of business operations and corporate law. We speak the language of the boardroom and business. We want to assist our clients to achieve the best possible outcome for their businesses and make an impact. With new developments in technology, we understand that the business-environment is changing fast globally and it’s important to us that we can provide our clients with the best service, both technically speaking and with a global presence, as we have great access to the KPMG network worldwide. Our international network certainly sets us apart from other domestic law firms.

Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

We believe that our practice in performing legal due diligence for clients, international tax, M&A related services as well as in the technical field will grow in the next 12 months. We believe that the evolving technology industry as well as a stronger growing economy will support growth in those practice areas. The increasing pace of regulatory changes and the continued development of EU Law will be a focus as well in our practices.

What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Our team is very strong and we hope to offer law-students internships and are always looking out for talented people. With the establishment of the firm, we can now offer our clients a broader service in the field of corporate law with 8 practicing attorneys on the team.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Yes, in some areas we can now offer our clients the same service as before but in a more efficient manner, e.g. due to the technological advances in some government practices.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

We have helped our clients with M&A processes, e.g. performed legal- and tax due diligence for the client, prior to their finalization of purchasing a business operation. Because of our focus on corporate- and tax law, and our access to access to other KPMG specialists, we are one of the few firms that are efficiently able to assist our clients to implement solutions for both legal, tax- and business issues. By bringing our clients a broad business perspective we help them add value to their business.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

We see our clients continuing need for cross-border legal advisory services. With more than 1,650 lawyers in 75 countries, collaboration with other KPMG teams and our broad expertise, we are able to meet the clients need for strategic direction as well as stability.
