Position

Sandra is a Partner in Lydian's Commercial practice, and her practice is focused on the Insurance and Pensions industry. Sandra is specialised in insurance law and pensions law. She assists Belgian and international (insurance) companies, professional organizations and insurance intermediaries with all insurance-related issues. She also advises companies on the different aspects of supplementary pensions, corporate governance, pension plans and management agreements. She has extensive experience in litigation involving insurance and pension matters. She regularly assists large Belgian insurance companies in strategic litigation with their agent networks. Her combined knowledge of collective insurance and pensions makes her a unique personality on the Belgian market. Sandra maintains very good contact with insurers, actuaries and control authorities.

Career

Sandra joined Lydian on 1 January 2002. In September 2000, she became an attorney at Loeff Claeys Verbeke (now Allen & Overy Belgium), where she was part of the Banking & Finance department. From 1994 to September 2000, she worked as a department manager at ING Insurance. Sandra was admitted to the Brussels Bar in 1999.

Sandra is a member of the Antwerp Insurance Club, the Belgian Association of Insurance Lawyers (AJA) and of the Royal Association of Belgian Insurers (CRAB/ KKVB). She is also a member of the Belgian Pension Lawyers Association (BePLA) and a member of the Board of Directors of the pension fund for lawyers, bailiffs and other independents (Voorzorgskas OFP). She is also a member of Women’s Law Network (WLN) and a member of the Brussels Bar.

Education

Sandra graduated with a law degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) in 1994. After her studies, she took a number of supplementary courses in insurance and risk management, including at Assuralia and with the German reinsurer, M√ľnchener R√ľck.

The 'solution-driven' and 'client-focused' team at Lydian is well known for its strength in insurance litigation, and reports an uptick in product liability disputes from the life sciences sector. Other areas of instruction include construction litigation,  white-collar crime matters, commercial and corporate disputes and competition litigation. The 'always available' Hugo Keulers heads the practice; Yves Lenders, Sandra Lodewijckx and  Annick Mottet Haugaard are other key names. The firm is acting for the Belgian subsidiary of Vivaldi Biosciences in a dispute relating to an alleged process development and manufacturing agreement between the client and biomanufacturing company Univercells.

Keulers is well-known for his involvement in most of the largest and high-value insurance disputes in Belgium in the last 15 years. His expertise includes areas such as product liability, D&O, advance loss of profit insurance and all risk property. Lodewijckx's background in private practice is complemented by her previous experience of working at ING Insurance (now Vivium). She assists clients with issues such as the distribution of insurance products, regulatory compliance, corporate governance and reviews of policy wording, among other matters. The team's recent work included advising CNA on the Belgian law aspects relating to its clinical trial insurance policy,¬†product liability policy and professional insurance policy. Another highlight involved assisting insurtech company Qover with¬†the policy wording of its products, and also with cooperation agreements with third parties, such as Immoweb and Deliveroo. The firm also acts for HDI Global SE, XL Catlin, Hiscox and AIG, among others.
