What do you see as the main points that differentiate Deloitte Conduit Law LLP from your competitors?

Deloitte Conduit Law (“DCL”) offers its services through an alternative business model.  Legal services for clients – ranging from small businesses to multinationals – are based on three categories: embedded counsel, gap counsel and targeted counsel.

With embedded counsel, lawyers are deployed to work as in-house counsel and trusted members of the client team.  Gap counsel is an On Demand® service to help fill gaps within an existing in-house legal team, while targeted lawyers come in for short-term projects or special engagements. 

Which practices in your member firm do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Clients are increasingly seeking more cost effective and value-added options for legal services, resulting in a shift in buying habits. Surveys of in-house lawyers have consistently reported that clients are looking to reduce outside legal budgets and obtain greater value.

What is the main change you have made in your firm that will benefit clients?

DCL adopts a client-centric approach to legal services and strongly advocates in favour of value pricing.

How is technology changing the way you interact with your clients and the services you can provide them?

New ways of working, enhanced technological solutions, and alternative business models are changing how clients are hiring lawyers and how lawyers are delivering legal services.

Our use of technology and standardized process workflows allow for the efficient and consistent high quality delivery of legal services.  Technology also enables us to operate a virtually paperless practice.

Can you give us a practical example of how you helped a client add value to their business?

DCL was commended as a standout in the Business of Law category by the Financial Times’ “North America Innovative Lawyers” in both 2014 and 2015. As an example, one of Canada’s largest banks, using DCL’s embedded package with fixed and variable fee arrangements, estimated savings of 30-40 per cent on legal fees compared with using a traditional external law firm, while achieving their business goals on time and on budget.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three year's time?

DCL has growth aspirations over the coming years. The combination of our NewLaw approach and alternative fee arrangements allows us to continue to serve our clients well. Additionally, we look forward to further leveraging our affiliation with Deloitte in Canada and globally to build and maintain enduring partnerships with our clients.
