Dmytro Pavlenko, Director of Deloitte Tax & Legal department in Ukraine

Dmytro Pavlenko, Director of Deloitte Tax & Legal department in Ukraine, discusses how the firm is adapting to clients' changing needs

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Deloitte in Ukraine from your competitors?

We have a presence globally, where our clients need us, with over 1,750 legal professionals  in more than 75 countries. We speak the language of the boardroom – business language, not just legalese. Deloitte in Ukraine is a full-scope legal service provider (with some exceptions related to litigation and arbitration). We also enjoy benefits from close cooperation with other Deloitte functions such as Tax, Financial Advisory, Consulting, ERS, and Audit.

Which practices in your member firm do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

The Ukrainian economy is being transformed due to its proximity to the European market, therefore, we invest a lot of our time in supporting these processes and providing legal advice to the government. We increase our cooperation with the public sector including state-owned enterprises. Our ambition is to become one of the leading legal providers in the market by providing value-added advice to our clients.

What is the main change you have made in your firm that will benefit clients?

Our proactive cooperation with the financial advisory and tax practices allows us to deliver high quality and complex M&A-related services including legal, tax and financial due diligence.

How is technology changing the way you interact with your clients and the services you can provide them?

Digital natives are used to obtaining the information they need online – increasingly in our field of business. Apart from the substantial amount of information already presented on our website – such as the International Dismissal Survey or the legal topics in the successful tax@hand app – we are now moving towards an interactive presentation of information about legal topics.

One of the very promising high-tech solutions in the Ukrainian market is the implementation of electronic documentation flow for corporate clients. We are now developing this complex service offering in cooperation with our tax and IT colleagues.

Can you give us a practical example of how you helped a client add value to their business?

We actively integrate a legal component into our growing forensic practice, which is part of financial advisory services. Our lawyers participate in the forensic engagements delivering added value to our clients.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three year's time?

One of the main ambitions of Deloitte in Ukraine is to drive transformation of the country’s economy. Our legal team is one of the active players with great focus on legislation development projects.
