As an objective example of this, Anita Chopra has been identified by the national media as the voice for education lawyers acting for children and parents. Over the last two years she has appeared on BBC Breakfast, Sunrise TV, Teachers TV, ITV London Tonight, BBC Tees, Radio 5 Live and LBC, and has been quoted in almost all national newspapers, including The Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian, on live education issues.

Both directors have been interviewed on BBC Solent and the firm has been highlighted as a specialist education law practice in the education section of the Saturday Telegraph. They have recently been asked to write a weekly column in The Times Educational Supplement regarding key education issues. The directors were finalists in the Asian Achievers Awards 2008 in the category of ‘Women of the Year’. They also presented the Platinum Award at the ceremony with Mr Ed Balls MP, the then Education Minister.

Salima Mawji is increasingly being seen as one of the very few specialists in this area and has secured a number of key referrals from other practices, including education practices, that acknowledge her as the key expert in this area. This last year has seen a significant increase in higher education internal appeals and appeals to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education. The firm has enjoyed a 95% success rate in achieving results for students at universities or colleges.

The firm continues to enjoy a thriving practice and has achieved a great deal in a short space of time. It has seen an 80-85% success rate in cases and about 5% of the firm’s annual turnover is dedicated to pro bono work.

The firm has grown over the last five years and now has two solicitors, one advocate and two key support staff.     In Harrow LBC v Ayiku [2012] EWHC 1200 (Admin) Sales J held that the word “or” in the Council Tax (Exempt Dwellings) Order 1992, art 3 Class N, had a disjunctive meaning, therefore it was sufficient for the non-British spouse of a foreign student to satisfy one or other of the two conditions, namely being prevented from taking paid employment or being prevented from claiming benefits, in order to qualify as a “relevant person” who was exempted from liability to pay council tax.

    In R (Calver) v Adjudication Panel for Wales [2012] EWHC 1172 (Admin) Mr Calver was a member of Manorbier Community Council who successfully challenged the decision of the Panel to dismiss his appeal against a decision by Prembrokeshire County Council Standards Committee censuring him for a number of comments or blogs posted by him on a website he owned and controlled.

    The Judgment of Lindblom J in The Manydown Co Ltd v Basingstoke and Deane BC [2012] EWHC 977 (Admin) repays attention. The Claimant sought to challenge by judicial review 2 decisions of the Council: (1) the Council’s refusal to reconsider its position on the development of a site that it owns (and is the subject matter of a Joint Development Partnership Agreement with the Claimant); and (2) a decision of the Council’s Cabinet approving a selection of sites for development which did not include this site.
