Benoît Kohl concentrates on real estate law and construction law in general. Besides negotiating contracts, drawing up legal advice and structuring operations in relation to these matters, he has also dealt with various disputes before judicial courts and in arbitrational procedures. Besides, he often acts as an arbitrator in these matters.

 Benoît Kohl is a full professor at the law faculty of the Université de Liège, where he heads the department for law of obligations and contract law. In 2010, he was appointed guest lecturer at the Université de Paris II (Panthéon Assas), where he teaches European construction law. He also conducts a specialised course on commercial law at the Ecole de Gestion HEC Liège. Moreover, at the law faculty, he is in charge of the programme of evening classes intended for construction professionals who wish to become legal experts.

Benoît Kohl is regularly invited as a guest speaker at conferences in Belgium or abroad. He has been Co-President of the Association Belge du Droit de la Construction since 2008. From 2011-2012, Benoît was also President of the European Society of Construction Law (ESCL).

In 2008, he won the UPSI award for his doctor’s thesis relating to the European harmonization of construction law and real estate promotion. In 2010, thanks to this thesis, he was awarded the triennial Jean Rey Award at the European Parliament.

Stibbe reports an increase in transactional work in the real estate space, which covers professional, commercial, residential, retail and hotel development projects. Financing work and PPP matters are other areas of instruction, for which the team works closely with corporate, public and environmental law experts. Recent highlights include Rony Vermeersch leading the advice to investment company LRM on the development and project financing aspects of the 100MW Kristal Solar Park, and in another matter, assisting Grimbergen Abbey with the negotiations for the development of a micro-brewery. Rudy Nauwelaerts, counsel Pieter Bogaert and of counsel BenoÎt Kohl are also noted. Matthias Maselis was a new arrival from Clifford Chance in September 2019.
