Career

Patrick Peeters specialises in public law and in particular in environmental, energy and zoning law. He has extensive litigation experience before both the Constitutional Court and the Council of State.

Patrick focuses on all regulatory aspects of electricity and gas legislation (EU, federal and regional legislation). He is recognised as an energy law specialist by a number of important players on the Belgian energy market.

He was admitted to the Brussels Bar in 1988 and became a partner with De Bandt, van Hecke & Lagae (subsequently Linklaters De Bandt) in 1994. In 2005, he became partner with NautaDutilh to develop the administrative law and regulatory practice.

Patrick is the author of numerous publications on constitutional law, comparative federalism and state reform. He is a senior lecturer on comparative federalism with the KULeuven.

NautaDutilh advises clients on the environmental issues associated with various types of energy projects, including renewable energy facilities, power plants, and oil and gas (production, transportation and storage) facilities. Senior counsel Patrick Peeters, who is the main contact at the firm, has assisted Belgian Shell with the development of LNG service stations in Belgium. He also provides standalone advice to clients on matters such as soil pollution, air and noise pollution and asbestos, among others. In recent work, Peeters advised Umicore on the end-of-waste criteria under the Waste Framework Directive and the Flemish implementing legislation in 2017. Eurostation and Fluxys are also active clients.

Within: Industry focus: energy

The energy and utilities group at NautaDutilh is headed by senior counsel Patrick Peeters and counts Belgian Shell, Direct Energie and Enel among its clients. The team is instructed by Fluxys in litigation relating to multiple proceedings concerning building and environmental permits for the construction and operation of high-pressure natural gas pipelines in the Flemish and Walloon region. Thibaut Willems is assisting Engie Electrabel with several matters including, various on-shore wind farm projects, as well as with setting up and implementing a crowdfunding platform for the investment by the public in certain energy projects.
