Michael Hopp is a partner in Plesner's Corporate & Compliance team and head of our Data Protection team. He is co-head of our Operational Compliance team.

Since 2000 Michael has been deeply involved in data protection law. Michael is widely recognised as a leading Danish advisor in the field.

Michael is in high demand among clients for his advice on the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Michael also advises clients on data protection compliance projects, international data transfers, whistle-blower hotlines, privacy policies for customers or employees, employee monitoring and data protection issues in relation to US Discovery.

Furthermore Michael has been instrumental in defining and formulating various large-scale compliance projects on behalf of large Danish businesses. For example, he has vast experience in drawing up binding corporate rules (BCR) then getting approval from the Danish Data Protection Agency.

In the area of marketing Michael has deep knowledge about data-driven marketing. In his work, Michael focuses particularly on the commercial gains to be made from the use of data-driven marketing. Specifically regarding the dynamic interpretation of legislation related to the promotion of new and unforeseen technologies, Michael is a value-adding adviser.

Michael has an extensive network, both nationally and internationally.

Contractual work, data protection and cloud computing are key strengths of Plesner's practice, which acts for clients including Danske Bank and Google. Niels Ellegaard jointly leads the team and recently advised Tryg Forsikring on its service agreements with companies including TCS, LTI and Accenture. Fellow practice head Michael Hopp specialises in data protection and assisted Copenhagen Airport with its GDPR compliance.

Plesner predominantly focuses on IP, commercial, technology and publishing matters in the media and entertainment sector. Key figures from the team include corporate and compliance expert Michael Hopp, marketing and consumer law specialist  Emil Jurcenoks, and Kasper Frahm, who has extensive experience in IP. Michael Vilhelm Nielsen joined Moalem Weitemeyer Bendtsen in 2018.

Plesner has notable expertise in public and commercial telecoms matters; group head Niels Ellegaard recently advised TT-Netværket on its outsourcing to Nokia, and transactional specialist Christian Kjølbye handled Macquarie's acquisition of TDC. Telenor, Fibia and OpenNet are also clients. Michael Hopp is the key name for data protection work.
