NYC Marathon raises 18,000pounds for charity

February 2012

Having completed the New York Marathon Chris Pitaluga and Yvonne Chu-Feetham raised £18,000 for charity - he has donated to RICC £10,000, to Pathway Through Pain £5,000 and to Cancer Relief £3,000. He presented the cheques to the representatives from the various charities (all in the picture).

Chris Pitaluga says that when they began fund-raising they were overwhelmed with the generosity of the local people and indeed some clients who were extremely generous as well, enabling them to raise a combined total of £18,000.

It all began when Yvonne saw Chris in Morrison's one day last year in March and wondered whether he had ever thought about doing a marathon, only ever having done some half-marathons before. "I said I had wanted to do one before my 51st birthday so agreed that it was a good idea and applied to enter the New York City Marathon which is usually massively over-subscribed. I managed to get in, as did Yvonne, and as the time drew closer we talked about raising some money for local charities." They both finished the NYC Marathon Yvonne in 4 hours 44 minutes and Chris in 4 hours and 57 minutes which was enough to get them both into the New York Times Finishers list that day. "I'm proud to have been beaten by a woman! It was an absolute terrific experience and a great day for running," says Chris.

Yvonne adds, "Chris did extremely well despite suffering some set-backs during his training due to injuries. It was also his first marathon and NYC is known as the toughest and hilliest course of the five major world marathons. We ran with 47,438 runners from all over the world through five boroughs, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan. The course took us over 5 bridges, amongst them, the Verrazano Narrow Bridge, and the Queensborough Bridge and the Pulaski Bridge. Despite the toughness of the course, it was an amazing experience! The crowd was electrifying and they made us feel like celebrities."
