Career

James is recognised for his work in high value civil litigation with an emphasis on insolvency, fraud and contentious trusts cases and regularly advises officeholders, institutional clients and regulated entities. He regularly appears as sole counsel and junior counsel before the Supreme Court of Gibraltar.

In recent years, James has taken a leading role within the firm advising Liquidators in large multijurisdictional insurance insolvencies, often complicated by fraud. Within this context he advises on general aspects of insolvency law as well as advising on potential claims against officers of the company, auditors and third parties. He has also appeared on behalf of both professional trustees and beneficiaries in a wide range of applications before the Supreme Court of Gibraltar.

James also has an extensive practice in non-contentious financial services matters where he regularly advises banking and other financial institutions on regulatory and contractual matters.

A techie at heart, at the age of 18 James started a small Internet Consultancy advising clients on structuring successful online ventures which continues today. ISOLAS LLP ‘houses some first-class dispute resolution lawyers’ and the firm is ‘responsive, efficient and understands intimately the Gibraltar litigation landscape’. The team is led by Mark Isola QC, who focuses on employment and landlord and tenant disputes. Also notable in the team is ‘pragmatic’ managing associate James Montado, who is active in litigation arising from cryptocurreny and ‘provides an excellent service’. The firm is representing Jyske Bank in an appeal of a decision by the Supreme Court of Gibraltar, in which the bank was found to have dishonestly assisted a group of fraudsters. In another highlight, the department is acting for Star Poland in general liquidation issues and related claims against former directors. Christian Rocca left the firm in early 2019 to become Director of Public Prosecutions for Gibraltar.
