First Gibraltarian Chief Justice appointed
Gibraltarian judge Anthony Dudley, 43, was yesterday formally appointed Chief Justice of Gibraltar. He is the first Gibraltarian to be appointed to that office on a non-acting basis.
Mr Justice Dudley has been acting Chief Justice for over two years since his predecessor Derek Schofield was suspended in September 2008. The post became vacant in October when Chief Justice Schofield was removed from office.
The announcement was made by The Convent yesterday evening. The statement said that, acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, the Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, had, on behalf of Her Majesty, appointed Justice Anthony Dudley as Chief Justice of Gibraltar. Last year the job commanded a salary of £101,555.
This followed interviews before the Commission last week presided over by Sir Murray Stuart Smith, head of the Gibraltar Judiciary.
Interviews for the post of additional judge were also held last week and an announcement is expected soon.
Mr Justice Dudley, married, with two daughters, was called to the Bar in 1989. After some years in private practice he became Registrar to the Supreme Court and acted as additional Stipendiary in that period. After a return to private practice he again joined the Gibraltar courts as Stipendiary Magistrate and Coroner.
It was in his post as Additional Judge that he subsequently became acting Chief Justice.
