Career

Enrique joined Gómez-Acebo & Pombo in 2009 and became a partner in 2009.

Professional career: Belongs to the Superior Corps of State Tax Inspectors since 1986, currently on leave of absence; in the area of taxation, has held a range of positions in the Regional Offices of the Spanish Tax Agency in Vigo and Valencia, the National Inspection Office and the Tax Collection Department; has focused his career in the accounting area, starting at the Accounting an Auditing Institute (ICAC in its Spanish acronym) where he held the position of Deputy Director General for Standardization and Accounting Techniques; entered the Technical Department of Deloitte, where he advised on the changes required for compliance with the IASB regulations adopted in Europe.

Teaching: Lecturer at the Public Revenue School of the Carlos III University in Madrid; Speaker on courses, master programmes and lectures organized by different institutions on tax and accounting matters.

Member of the ICAC’s Consultative Committee on Accounting and was part of the Expert Group appointed by the ICAC to undertake the reform of the Spanish General Accounting Standards; Chairman of the AECA (Spanish Association of Accounting and Business Administration) Commission of Accounting Standards and Principles; in the international arena, he belongs to the IASB’s Private Entities Working Group Members.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo is experienced in transactional, planning and tax litigation issues. The firm is active in contentious matters before the regional and national tax authorities, as well as national and supreme courts. The multi-disciplinary team is led by Enrique Ortega, whose expertise includes M&A tax issues. His team is representing FC Barcelona before the Spanish and other tax authorities, as part of a global tax audit, in relation to several ongoing tax controversies. In other highlights, the firm advised Japanese chemical manufacturing company Kaneka Corporation on the tax structuring of its acquisition of the Spanish company AB-Biotics, and acted for Santander in an appeal before the High Court of Justice of Madrid, in a tax litigation process involving Madrid real estate taxes.
