Anderson Strathern is a leading Scottish full-service law firm working across the commercial, private client and public sectors. It has its principal offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The firm has 54 partners, 148 fee-earners and a total staff of 219. It offers a wide range of specialist services with 19 Law Society of Scotland accredited specialists, a solicitor advocacy unit with six solicitor advocates and 11 dual-qualified solicitors. The firm has a significant roster of clients across its key areas, including the Scottish government, the UK government, the Crown Estate, Clyde Gateway, City Legacy, INEOS, Buccleuch Estates, the University of the West of Scotland and the Royal College of Nursing. In its latest financial year to end August 2014, Anderson Strathern reported an increase in profit of 12% and revenues of £21.5m.
The firm: In September 2014 the firm saw the appointment of a new managing partner, Murray McCall, and the Glasgow office moved to flagship new premises on George Square. In the first half of 2015 the firm increased its corporate and commercial offering with a lateral hire strategy which saw new partner Mark Cowie, a construction and project finance specialist, join the corporate team in Glasgow from McClure Naismith along with Douglas McLaughlin, an IP specialist who joined from DWF. Employment partner Paul Brown also joined from DWF and is based in the Glasgow office. Internally, 12 solicitors were promoted and 11 trainees were retained as NQ solicitors.
The firm has had a significant number of new client wins and panel appointments at competitive tender in 2014/15, including the Architects’ Registration Board, the General Teaching Council for Scotland, the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission, Midlothian Council, Scottish Water, Roxburghe Estates, the University of the West of Scotland, Edinburgh College, City of Glasgow College and High Life Highland.
The Scottish Legal Awards 2015 recognised the firm’s strength and depth in the full range of legal services. It won three separate awards – the prestigious Public Sector Team of the Year, the Employment Team of the Year, and also saw its new residential property partner Sara Jalicy collect Rising Star of the Year.
Anderson Strathern is the only law firm in Scotland to have both the Investors in People (IIP) Gold Award and the IIP Young People Award. The firm was first awarded the Investors in People (IIP) Gold Accreditation in 2011, the highest level of recognition for the championing of best practice in the development and management of all of its 219 employees. It was awarded the IIP Young People Accreditation in 2015. Alongside this, the firm became one of the first law firms in Scotland to become an accredited living wage employer.
