Anderson Strathern is a leading Scottish full-service law firm working across the commercial, private client and public sectors. It has its principal offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The firm has 53 partners, 187 fee-earners and a total staff of 230. It offers a wide range of specialist services with 22 Law Society of Scotland accredited specialists, a Solicitor Advocacy Unit with seven solicitor advocates and cross-border working with11 dual-qualified solicitors. The firm has a significant roster of clients across its key areas, including the Scottish government, the Crown Estate, Clyde Gateway, City Legacy, INEOS, Apex Hotels, Intu Braehead, Buccleuch Estates, Bluemerang Capital, Quercus Healthcare Property Partnership, Walker Holdings (Scotland) Ltd, the University of the West of Scotland, Edinburgh Napier University, the Royal College of Nursing, Scotmid and the Scottish Prison Service. In its latest financial year to end August 2015, Anderson Strathern reported an 8.2 per cent increase in profits per full equity partner (PEP) and turnover up at £21.7m.
The firm: In the first half of 2016 the firm increased both its commercial and private client offerings with the acquisition of niche commercial litigation practice ADLP and the arrival of its principal partner Alistair Dean and its merger with long-established Glasgow-based private client firm Jeffrey Aitken.
Over the last year, the firm’s lateral hire strategy has seen the appointments of Janice Jones, Head of Family Law from Harper MacLeod and Anne Henderson, former Head of Private Client (Scotland) at DWF. Internally, five new partners were appointed and 12 solicitors were promoted.
The firm has had a significant number of new client wins and panel appointments at competitive tender in 2015/16, including all six lots of the recent Central Government Legal Services Framework, Scottish Prison Service, Transport Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council, Lloyds Banking Group, West Lothian Council, The Care Inspectorate, Glasgow Clyde College, Police Scotland, Fife College, Glasgow Caledonian University, Edinburgh Napier University, City of Glasgow College, Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration and the Parole Board for Scotland. The firm was recognised as the legal employer of choice in Scotland when it won the Employer of the Year at the Scottish Legal Awards 2016. Anderson Strathern was the first law firm to achieve the double success of Investors in Young People Gold and Investors in People Gold accreditations. The firm was first awarded the Investors in People (IIP) Gold Accreditation in 2011, the highest level of recognition for the championing of best practice in the development and management of all of its 230 employees. It was awarded the IIP Young People Accreditation in 2015. Alongside this, the firm became one of the first law firms in Scotland to become an accredited living wage employer and to sign the Scottish Government’s Business Pledge.
