Albors Galiano Portales is a point of reference for shipping and insurance instuctions in the Spanish market. Past work includes advice to the owners, and H&M and P&I insurers in connection with the Sorrento passenger ship fire off the Majorcan coast. Eduardo Albors, Javier Galiano and Javier Portales are recognised for their expertise.

Blas de Lezo recently opened an office in Houston, Texas to channel an increasing workflow from the US. The practice, which includes a highly respected group of UK-qualified professionals, is praised for its high-quality service. It successfully advised a large shipping group on contentious tax matters. Head of practice Miquel Roca is highly recommended.

Despite being a young firm, Avante Legal can draw on the vast experience of its lawyers and is quickly positioning as one of the more visible firms in this sector. The firm acted for Royal & Sun Alliance in litigation against two local insurance corporations for recovery of damages caused by the loss of a crane during its loading on to a vessel. Julio López Quiroga, Antonio Quirós and Jacobo Tojeiro are names to note. Clients include Remolcanosa, Murimar and Cernaval Shipyard.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados’ shipping team is regularly instructed on some of the most prominent maritime-finance transactions such as ship financing, tax leasing, syndicated loans, restructuring and refinancing. Carlos Rueda and Miguel Lamo de Espinosa are recommended.

Meana Green Maura & Co advised the owners of Costa Concordia and its P&I club insurers in connection to passenger claims arising from the capsize and loss of the vessel; name partner Pedro Maura led the team. Managing partner Jaime Soroa is currently assisting an international client with a multimillion-dollar drilling contract.

Mestre Abogados’ team is vastly experienced, particularly in shipping and insurance matters. The practice recently advised on a high-value cargo claim involving several jurisdictions. Managing partner Anna Mestre is the key contact.

Acting for shipowners and P&I clubs in an array of matters including collisons, spillages and cargo claims, Muñoz & Montañes has built a strong reputation for its expertise in shipping law. José Muñoz and Alicia Montañes are noted.

Perez Albors | & Co’ practice is ‘excellent in all aspects: its service to clients, flexibility and constant availability’. Recent work includes advising Sea Consortium PTE (and its P&I club in Hong Kong) regarding a cargo loss-and-damages claim resulting from the collapse of container stowage. Carlos Pérez and María Antonia Albors are praised for the quality of their advice.

Ruiz-Gálvez Abogados SLP works on all aspects of the maritime transport area. Fernando Ruiz-Gálvez Villaverde is the name to note.

San Simon & Duch is respected by clients and peers alike for its advice on maritime and insurance matters. Luis de San Simón and Mercedes Duch are recommended.

An important name in the shipping area, Uría Menéndez assists shipyards, insurers, reinsurers (and P&I clubs), brokers, financiers and transport operators, among others. The team advised Noatum Ports on negotiations for the lifting and transportation of several port cranes, a €5m operation. Tomás Fernández-Quirós and Carlos López-Quiroga lead the team. Julio López Quiroga left the team to join Avante Legal.

Boutique firm Abogados Asociados para el Comercio, la Navegación y la Industria specialises in complex cross-border maritime disputes. Albert Badia heads the practice.

Actam Abogados is well-known for its work in the maritime and logistics sector.

Felipe Arizon leads the team at Arizon Abogados SLP. Clients include FJ Sánchez, Tallinn Shipyard and Accoe.

Cuatrecasas has a solid track-record advising shipowners on shipbuilding and the acquistion of secondhand tonnage. It advised PEMEX on oil and gas transportation matters and the construction of two new ships in Spain. Iñigo Quintana leads the team. Clients include MSC Mediterranean, Murimar and Baleria Shipping Line.

Garrigues is regularly engaged by Lloyd’s syndicate underwriters, shipowners, banks and shpyards to assist with regulatory, corporate and contentious matters. Jesús Barbadillo heads the practice and recent mandates saw the team advise Comarit, Líneas Marítimas Europeas and Comanav Ferry on a judicial review concerning fines imposed by the competition authorities.

The lawyers at Hogan Lovells International LLPhave a good knowledge of the industry and offer pertinent advice’. Practice co-heads, Miguel Ángel Sánchez and Luis Alfonso Fernández provide knowledge of the design and implementation of tax structures for the acquisition and financing of assets, and expertise in marine-related contentious matters, respectively.
