Albors Galiano Portales is a leading name in the shipping space and is highly regarded in the market. The team represented Hanjin Shipping in insolvency proceedings before the Korean courts, and acted for the hull insurers in connection with an incident in the Canary Islands involving the vessel Volcan de Tamasite. Eduardo Albors, Javier Portales and Alfonso de Ochoa are recommended.

‘Compact but versatile boutique firm’ Avante Legal impresses with its ‘outstanding quality of service’ and ‘personal attention to clients and knowledge of the sector’. Julio López Quiroga, Antonio Quirós and Jacobo Tojeiro are the key names. It it currently acting for a client in one of the most notable damages claims in the sector, and is advising Icelandic Bank on the arrangement of a security package connected to the financing granted for the purchase of a fish processing company. Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s shipping practice handles high-end financing matters, often with a cross-border element. Highlights included advising a syndicate of Spanish banks led by BBVA, as the agent, and including Banco de Sabadell, Bankinter and Caixabank, on the credit line granted to shipyard Astilleros de Murueta for the construction of two factory vessels for Royal Greenland, which included assisting BBVA with a refund guarantee facility. At Mestre Abogados, ‘the pro-active, innovative and flexible’ practice is led by the ‘commercially aware’ Anna Mestre. The team advises submarine investigation corporation QSTAR on various charter contracts in the submarine investigation industry. Galp and Marmedsa Noatum Maritime are new clients.

Perez Albors | & Co’s team stands out for its ‘clarity of advice and problem-solving approach’. The ‘knowledgeable’ Carlos Pérez assists the London P&I club and the owners of Greek vessel Alex A in a claim initiated by Telefónica concerning damage to a fibre optic cable in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Uría Menéndez has a good reputation in the space, especially on the financing side, and assists shipyards, insurers, reinsurers (and P&I clubs), brokers, financiers and transport operators. In one highlight, the team acted for the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds before the Spanish Supreme Court in a dispute pertaining to the ‘Prestige’ case, concerning a major oil spill in Spanish waters. Hogan Lovells International LLP assists financial institutions and shipbuilders with shipping finance and regulatory matters. The group advised Bankinter on the structuring of a tax lease connected to the financing of the construction of the world’s second largest ferry. Miguel Àngel Sánchez is the key name.

MA Abogados’ lawyers are highly specialised in matters pertaining to private and public maritime law. Carlos Salinas and Sara Recatalá are the key names.

Meana Green Maura & Co’s team provides ‘sound and pragmatic advice paired with deep knowledge of the market’.
