At Bird & Bird, ‘the experienced and knowledgeable team’ is led by Manuel Lobato. The group is defending B. Braun Melsungen in a patent nullity action initiated by an Indian manufacturer; the team had previously successfully acted for the same client in a related patent dispute brought by the claimant’s Spanish representative. Other clients include Chemo, Sygenta, Actavis and Rovi. Raul Bercovitz and Antonio Cueto are also recommended.

Clifford Chance’s ‘excellent’ team has ‘extensive industry knowledge’ and provides ‘very quick responses, appropriate advice and reasonable value for money’. The team represents Janssen Pharmaceutica in nullity proceedings initiated by Gadea Biopharma relating to the client’s product Xeplion and is also acting for the client in proceedings challenging the Spanish Patents and Trademarks Office’s decision to grant a supplementary protection certificate for a separate product. The ‘reputable’ Miquel Montañá has ‘a savvy’ approach and Josep Montefusco was recently promoted to the partnership.

Elzaburu’s patent prosecution caseload is ‘impressive’ and it provides ‘timely responses, clear and pragmatic solutions and value for money’. Antonio Castán acted for a Spanish corporation in resisting the imposition of a preliminary injunction, successfully preventing the client’s product from being withdrawn from the market. Enrique Armijo and Francisco Sáez are other key names.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s sizeable team is regularly involved in high-end, cross-border matters and its expertise spans protection issues, commercialisation and the enforcement of patents. Practice head Eduardo Castillo, Gonzalo Ulloa and Álvaro de Castro are representing Bristol-Myers Squibb and Ono in a patent infringement and nullity claim against Merck & Co. Jesús Muñoz-Delgado, Sofía Martínez and José Miguel Lissén are also noted.

Grau & Angulo advises client in an array of sectors on complex matters in the patent space. Founding partner Jorge Grau, alongside Jesús Arribas and Laura Morales, successfully acted for Nestlé in a dispute with Fast Eurocafé concerning the client’s Nescafé Dolce Gusto product. Fellow founding partner Alejandro Angulo and Javier Huarte are other key names. Ignacio Marqués was a new arrival from Baker McKenzie.

Herrero & Asociados represents local and international corporations in a variety of sectors, including a number of Ibex 35 corporations. Clients include Gas Natural, Freixenet, Repsol, Hasbro, Paris Hilton and LinkedIn. José Luis López, Juan Casulá and María Ángeles Moreno are noted.

Recent work for Uría Menéndez’s team included defending Roche Diagnostics against allegations of patent infringement concerning its non-invasive pre-natal test, and acting for NSK and Toyota Motor Corporation in proceedings against two Japanese motor vehicle manufacturers in disputes pertaining to alleged patent infringements. José Massaguer, Montiano Monteagudo and Ingrid Pi are recommended.

Abril Abogados, SL is a key name for patent disputes. Recent highlights include advising Pharmex Losartan on a variety of IP and contractual issues and acting for a US corporation in litigation concerning a breach of its European patent rights. Bankinter and Volvo are also clients. Ignacio Temiño and Carlos González are the key contacts.

Boutique firm Balder has notable expertise in the electro-mechanical and telecoms sectors. Clients includes Repsol, ThyssenKrupp, Hard Rock, Bulgari and Visa. Litigation practice head Patricia Koch and Miguel Aznar are the names to note.

Cuatrecasas’ team assists local and international clients with innovative patent issues. New arrival Álvaro Bourkaib, who joined from Uría Menéndez, coordinates the Madrid team, and works closely with Barcelona-based head of practice Albert Agustinoy. The group handled patent litigation for Oatly and provides ongoing advice to Ipsen on patent and know-how matters. Jorge Llevat is also noted.

Eversheds Sutherland Nicea handles complex, big-ticket patent disputes for local and international pharmaceutical and chemical clients, including Merck & Co, DuPont and Huntsman. Kiko Carrión represented Teva Pharmaceutical in successfully challenging a patent injunction granted to Pfizer in proceedings before the Spanish Court of Appeal. José Mariano Cruz co-heads the practice.

Garrigues successfully represented 3M in a landmark patent infringement case pertaining to one of the client’s products; the case set precedent on direct and indirect patent infringement in Spain. Carolina Pina and João Miranda de Sousa jointly head the team. Enrique Grande and Mónica Arizti are also noted.

Hoyng Rokh Monegier’s experienced patent litigation team has a core focus on the life sciences, electronics and telecoms sectors. The team successfully represented technology corporation Fractus in three different preliminary injunctions. Luis Fernández Novoa, Álvaro Velázquez and José Antonio Sanmartín are key contacts.

DLA Piper LLP’s team advised a global engineering company on the protection and defence of several valuable patents. Clients include Levi Strauss, Warner Bros, Pfizer and Bacardi. Diego Ramos is the name to note.

At Deloitte Legal, Dulce Miranda is advising a major Spanish bank on matters connected to the protection, use, and maintenance of its financial software products. Other clients include Spain’s National Paralympics Committee, Roche and Teva Pharmaceutical.

Hogan Lovells International LLP is best known for handling patent disputes with a global element for pharmaceutical and telecoms clients. Ana Castedo is representing a major telecoms corporation in patent infringement proceedings; the claim is valued in excess of €500m. Practice heads Burkhart Goebel and Andreas Renck and associate Inmaculada Lorenzo are noted.

Jausas’ experienced team handles patent registration, as well as defending against patent infringement claims. Josep Carbonell leads the practice.
