Industry focus: TMT
Baker McKenzie’s market leading team is ‘unbeatable in terms of quality, response times and price’. The team is co-led by José María Méndez, who is responsible for media, and Raúl Rubio, who is a ‘great lawyer’ for IT and telecoms matters. On the media side the firm acts for several major studios on their Spanish production agreements, and it recently advised an on-demand TV provider on its launch in Spain.
‘Excellent in all respects’, ECIJA is praised for its ‘international perspective’, ‘strategic vision and responsiveness’, and for providing an ‘in-depth knowledge of the legal needs of the business’. Acting for start-ups and venture capital firms as well as established media and IT companies, practice clients include Fremantle Media, M&C Saatchi, Autodesk, BT, Colt Telecom and Wuaki TV. The ‘fast and reliable’ Alejandro Touriño is the contact for IT, the ‘analytical’ Carlos Pérez for media.
‘Great to work with’, the ‘responsive’ team at Garrigues is praised for its ‘deep knowledge’. Javier Marzo and Carolina Pina lead on the telecoms-and-media side, while ‘reliable expert’ José Ramón Morales (who has ‘broad industry experience’), is outsourcing and technology head. Recent highlights include advising NBC Universal on the financing and production of ‘Jason Bourne’ in the Canary Islands. Other major clients include Accenture, Google, Facebook and IBM.
Uría Menéndez’s 12-lawyer TMT practice is commended for its ‘practical approach, solid knowledge and deep business understanding’. Team head Pablo González-Espejo brings ‘great knowledge and experience’, while Teresa Paz-Ares is also well regarded. The firm represents household names including Facebook, Microsoft, Vodafone, and Twitter, and is advising the national lottery, SELAE, on all its TMT matters.
Clifford Chance recently advised MásMovil on its multimillion-euro acquisition of Yoigo. On the IT side, the team represented Autodesk on the acquisition of Spanish software company Solid Angle. Juan José Lavilla heads the team which includes managing partner and corporate expert Jaime Velázquez and Luis Alonso.
Cuatrecasas is well known for its advice on IT and data protection issues. On the telecoms side it advised TeliaSonera on the sale of its stake in Yoigo to MásMóvil. Other active clients include Pokerstars, Nexeo Solutions and Euskaltel. Albert Agustinoy heads the team.
DLA Piper LLP has strong expertise in litigation and data protection issues, as well as a highly active corporate arm. A highlight on this front was advising CVC Capital Partners on the €1.2bn merger of R Cable and Euskaltel. Team head Diego Ramos is well regarded for privacy issues. Clients include Vodafone, Pfizer and Electronic Arts.
Corporate partner Almudena Arpón de Mendívil heads the cross-departmental TMT group at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados, which also includes IP/IT experts José Miguel Lissén Arbeloa and Eduardo Castillo. Recent work has seen the practice advising telecoms and media clients on alliances to cross-sell content. Warner Bros is a major client.
Led by the ‘clever and thoughtful’ Norman Heckh, the ‘outstanding’ practice at Ramón y Cajal Abogados has ‘deep experience of the TMT industry’. The team is highly experienced in IT contracts, and advised cruise operator Pullmantur Group on IT outsourcing agreements for its fleet. Other clients include BMW, Campofrio, Novomatic and Biogen.
Olswang Spain LLP provides ‘focused and practical advice’ in IT and telecoms law. Group head Blanca Escribano is ‘good at providing training to in-house lawyers’ and her ‘telecoms market and regulatory knowledge is outstanding’. The firm provides day-to-day regulatory, data protection and commercial advice to major clients including BT Spain, Roam Mobility, Softonic and Ikea.
IP & IT boutique Abril Abogados, SL provides ‘an excellent level of service and value for money’. Co-led by Carlos González and Ignacio Temiño (who is praised for his ‘business approach, availability and broad experience’), it recently advised General Motors on its legal strategy against consumer groups campaigning against the company on social media platforms such as Facebook.
Bird & Bird is well known for its advice to the technology and telecoms sectors, but the departure of highly regarded group head Javier Fernández-Samaniego is a significant blow. Counsel Pablo Berenguer leads on the IT side, while associate Paula Fernández-Longoria heads the data protection team.
Hogan Lovells International LLP is praised for being ‘one of the most knowledgeable teams in the area of data-protection in Europe’, and its experience allows it to ‘provide actionable advice off-the-cuff’. The ‘extremely savvy and pragmatic’ Gonzalo Gállego heads the four-partner team, which advises Google, Axa, Airbnb and Experian, among others.
Paloma Bru heads the team at Jones Day, which is particularly strong on data-protection issues. The firm recently advised retail giant El Corte Inglés on its data breach plan and privacy compliance programme so as to ensure compliance with new EU regulations.
Linklaters is recommended for transactional and regulatory telecoms advice and recently represented Telefónica in a Supreme Court appeal seeking that the telecoms regulator review the price paid by other operators to use its network. Regulatory expert José Giménez heads the team.
RCD – Rousaud Costas Duran has an excellent track record advising start-up companies and venture capital funds. It recently advised a mobile app start-up on a $10m investment. Ignasi Costas and Carles Ros are both recommended.
