Baker McKenzie stands out for its ‘high level of specialisation and performance, striving for excellence by seeking out the particulars of each case’. Raúl Rubio, praised by clients as ‘the best IT and IP lawyer in Iberia’, leads on IT and telecoms matters and José María Méndez is the contact for media work. The firm acts for major film and TV studios; it is also experienced in providing data protection advice.

The ‘commercial, inventive and flexible’ team at CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo benefits from its recent merger with Olswang LLP to provide the full spectrum of TMT advice. The firm works with Spanish and international industry giants and is noted for its work with start-ups, where ‘far from the classic model of consultation and response, it gets involved in all aspects of a company’s growth’.

Garrigues has ‘incredible experience, offering a strategic and practical approach to challenging legal matters’. Carolina Pina, who provides ‘spot-on advice that takes the political and industry environments into account’, and Javier Marzo, who has ‘a creative’ approach, lead the telecoms and media side; notable deals include advising Zegona Communications on its sale of Telecable to Euskaltel. José Ramón Morales, who ‘understands the client’s needs’, is the key name for outsourcing and technology. Key work in the space includes acting for Social Point on the €284m sale of its shares and voting rights to Grand Theft Auto-maker Take-Two Interactive. Uría Menéndez draws on leading experts from its litigation and transactional teams to provide a wide range of advice to key industry players. Highlights included assisting Facebook with e-commerce, advertising and data protection matters and handling software and commercial advice for Microsoft; it also works with Vodafone on the telecoms front. M&A experts Pablo González-Espejo and Teresa Paz-Ares are the key names.

Exceptional’ five-partner boutique Abril Abogados, SL specialises in IP and IT, with particular expertise in contentious matters. The firm is at the forefront of industry developments, acting for the Spanish Press Association on contractual relationships with press clipping companies, including enforcement actions against infringers. Other highlights include acting for Discovery Channel in domain name proceedings and advising on the deactivation of social media profiles. Co-founders Carlos González and Ignacio Temiño are the main contacts.

Clifford Chance is particularly active in disputes in the space, market concentration and financing transactions. Highlights included representing Oracle in a Supreme Court abuse of dominance case. Juan José Lavilla, who provides ‘quick responses and thorough knowledge’, leads the team, which includes managing partner and corporate expert Jaime Velázquez.

With more than 40 fee-earners, Cuatrecasas’ multidisciplinary practice is strong in IT and data protection advice. New hire Álvaro Bourkaib, who joined from Uría Menéndez, heads the IP group in Madrid and Albert Agustinoy is the contact in Barcelona. The firm acts on high-value telecoms deals; recent work includes advising Grupo Multitel on its bid for a contract from the Mexican government to access its $7bn open-access network.

DLA Piper LLP is ‘a leader in data protection advice’. Recent highlights include advising Rubbermaid (part of Newell Brands) on the redesign of its IT policy regarding commercial network databases. ‘Incredibly responsiveDiego Ramos leads on privacy and technology matters. Legal director Bartolomé Martín is also noted.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo is frequently instructed by clients in the telecoms, audio-visual and technology sectors. Corporate and antitrust expert Almudena Arpón de Mendívil heads the TMT group; she is leading advice to Eutelsat on the €302m sale of its 33.7% stake in Hispasat to majority shareholder Abertis as well as assisting Dixons Carphone with the sale of its Spanish division to Global Dominion Access.

Ramón y Cajal Abogados provides ‘solutions tailored to the client’, particularly with respect to data protection and IT contracts. ‘Technically skilled and committed’ IT partner Norman Heckh is leading advice to digital experience company Applause with respect to negotiations regarding digital app testing.

Bird & Bird’s team provides ‘a highly responsive’ service and ‘understands complex business and industry issues’; its recent workload includes litigation, privacy, commercial and IP advice. Key work includes assisting Gilead Sciences with all privacy and data protection matters. Counsel Alexander Benalal is recommended for his ‘ability to tailor advice to the client’.

Eversheds Sutherland Nicea provides ‘value for money and on-time advice’. Highlights included defending Sony and Kobalt in a plagiarism claim concerning Shakira’s hit song La Bicicleta. Vicente Arias leads advice to Microsoft on data retention periods and is assisting OpenText with the drafting of data processing arrangements and a privacy policy review.

Hogan Lovells International LLP acts for well-known industry names, handling matters from data transfer and compliance advice to IT outsourcing, software rights and cloud computing issues. Gonzalo Gállego heads the team.

Linklaters is well-respected in the telecoms sector; José Giménez is leading advice to Telefónica on regulatory matters and to BT on legislation relating to the monitoring and prevention of malicious communications. Other notable work includes advising beIN Sports on its tender process to acquire audio-visual rights relating to the Spanish football league.
