Clifford Chance’s ‘great value team’ provides ‘a great level of service’ and a ‘high success rate in a complex field’. The practice is best known for patent litigation and recently represented Astra Zeneca in a patent infringement proceeding against Sandoz Farmaceutica concerning generic product Faslodex. A ‘pragmatic’ and a ‘creative thinker’, group head, Miquel Montañá is both ‘experienced and highly respected’. Other clients include Pfizer, Novartis and Eli Lilly.

Faus & Moliner is an extremely well-respected life-sciences boutique with ‘great knowledge of pharmaceutical law’, thanks in part to the expertise of its name partners Jordi Faus and Xavier Moliner. Based in Barcelona, the firm is especially well regarded for regulatory issues. Clients include Novartis and Pierre Fabre.

Uría Menéndez’s ‘high quality’ practice group includes ‘excellent professionals’ in areas such as IP, public law, competition and parallel trade issues. The firm recently advised a major pharmaceutical company in a significant strategic public-private collaboration project in the hospital care sector. Key partners include Teresa Paz-Ares, who is a ‘good negotiator with great knowledge of the contracts’; the ‘outstanding’ Beatriz Cocina; and the ‘clever’ Ingrid Pi. Clients include Pfizer, Roche, Sanofi and Novartis.

Baker McKenzie’s practice is co-led by the ‘outstanding’ Montserrat Llopart, who is praised for her ‘good industry knowledge and concise advice’, in conjunction with Cecilia Pastor. Highlights include advising on the dissolution of the Sanofi Pasteur joint venture between Sanofi and Merck. Active clients include Abbott, ISDIN, Medtronic and Allergan.

Bird & Bird’s highly regarded practice group is jointly overseen by IP head Manuel Lobato and administrative and public law head Raquel Ballesteros. The team recently advised IMS Health on several public procurement tenders launched by regional healthcare providers. Other clients include Desma Pharma, Tasty Green and Fontem Ventures.

IP partner Jorge Llevat and EU & competition expert Cani Fernández co-lead the practice at Cuatrecasas. In recent work, the team advised Intercept Pharmaceuticals on its Spanish launch, as well as several clinical trials. Other clients include Fresenius Medical Care and Abbott Laboratories.

Garrigues’ full-service team recently advised 4D Pharma on its €6m acquisition of the development and production assets of Instituto Biomar. The group is jointly led by corporate partner José Fernández-Rañada and tax partner Antonio Molins.

Impressive boutique Jausas is praised for its ‘expertise in the field’ and has a strong following among domestic and international pharmaceutical companies. Team head Héctor Jausàs is praised for his ‘soundness’, while associate Gemma Colomer is commended for her ‘high technicality’.

RCD – Rousaud Costas Duran offers its biotech clients a strong commercial and regulatory practice, with Ignasi Costas and Oscar Alegre both experienced practitioners. Recent work saw the team advise a research institute on the establishment of a spin-off company.

DLA Piper LLP’s ‘superior’ team gives ‘pragmatic counsel’ to major clients including Pfizer, Zimmer, St. Jude Medical and Novocure, and recently advised West Pharma on the privacy implications of its research activities in Spain. Team head Diego Ramos ‘takes time to get to know our business and provide support as a true business partner’.

Eversheds Sutherland Nicea has a strong sector offering, notably in patent litigation, product liability and general regulatory and commercial matters. Kiko Carrión heads the team whose clients include Merck & Co, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk and Teva.

IP partner Eduardo Castillo heads the practice at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados, which also includes the US and Spain-qualified corporate partner, Richard Silberstein. On the IP side the team advised BMS and Ono in a major patent infringement case regarding an antibody drug for the treatment of cancer.

Directed by managing partner Luis Fernández-Novoa, Hoyng Rokh Monegier is well known for patent litigation. Major clients include Merck Sharp & Dohme, Sanofi and Abbott.

Pérez-Llorca is strong on the regulatory front, thanks to the leadership of public law expert Juan Manuel Rodriguez Cárcamo. Major clients include Johnson & Johnson, Meda Pharma and Merz Pharma.
