Baker McKenzie’s ‘excellent’ eight-partner employment team is led by David Diaz and Mireia Sabaté from Madrid and Barcelona, respectively. The practice is praised for its ‘first-hand knowledge of the operation of multinational companies with complex structures’, and recently advised Sanofi Pasteur on a collective redundancy procedure following the termination of its joint venture with Merck & Co.

Acting for some of Spain’s largest companies and financial institutions, Cuatrecasas’ 12-partner team advises on contentious and non-contentious matters. It recently assisted Indra with a redundancy plan for 400 employees working in its Indra BPO Servicios subsidiary. Practice head Jordi Puigbó leads a group which includes highly rated partners such as Salvador del Rey and Francisco Conde. Other major clients include Nokia, Caixabank, Banco Popular, ABB and Heineken.

Garrigues’ ‘superb’ 31-partner employment team provides ‘excellent’ value for money, and its lawyers are ‘always on schedule’. Practice head Rosa Zarza has ‘great business acumen, knowledge and experience’ and ‘immense common sense’, while Rafael Giménez-Arnau ‘understands clients’ needs from the beginning’. The team recently advised FCC Construccion on its third collective dismissal since 2013, involving 742 employees. Marisa López Villalba and José Luis Cebrián are also recommended.

Spain’s leading employment law boutique, Sagardoy Abogados, member of Ius Laboris handles issues of the highest level, including corporate restructurings, immigration and large-scale redundancy procedures. The firm houses a number of highly-rated experts, including Iñigo Sagardoy, Martín Godino, and Román Gil.

Uría Menéndez has a high quality six-partner team led from Madrid by the ‘absolutely amazingIgnacio García-Perrote. The equally strong Barcelona-based practice includes reputed partners such as Mario Ibáñez. Recently the firm advised Vodafone on two collective redundancy procedures affecting over 1,000 staff, as well as a common collective bargaining agreement involving 4,000 employees. Mario Barros Garcia and Juan Reyes are names to note.

Juan Calvente heads the ‘extremely professional and engaged’ team at Clifford Chance, whose ‘excellent professionals’ provide the ‘highest standard’ of service. Notable mandates include advising major client Pfizer on a collective dismissal procedure affecting 184 employees, as well as the disciplinary dismissal of 19 further employees. Other clients include MADES, Citigroup and Banco Santander.

DLA Piper LLP has a ‘strong’ two-partner team, comprising managing partner (and practice head) Pilar Menor and Paz de la Iglesia. An impressive roster of clients includes Vodafone and Grupo Alfonso Gallardo, which it successfully represented in a redundancy dispute with trade unions (concerning 400 employees), that went to the Supreme Court.

Abdón Pedrajas & Molero is an ‘excellent’ employment boutique, with several highly-experienced partners, including managing partner Antonio Pedrajas, group head Iván López (who ‘provides excellent relationship management’), and Sonia Cortés (who gives ‘clear, practical advice and is quick to reply’). Major clients include BT, RBS, Zurich Insurance and DIA.

The employment boutique Ceca Magán Abogadoshas real expertise in the field’ and is commended for its ‘great specialisation and knowledge’ and ‘reasonable fees’. Name partner Esteban Ceca Magán is supported by a 20-lawyer team split between Madrid and Barcelona. Clients include Banco Madrid, Starbucks, Wallapop and SNIACE, which it recently advised on the redundancy of 533 employees.

Fernando Bazán heads the ‘excellent’ 40-lawyer practice at Deloitte Abogados, which is praised for its ‘technical quality and perfect implementation of the appropriate procedures’. The team recently advised Nueva Pescanova Group on its company-wide restructuring, which included ten collective bargaining agreements. Key clients include Grupo Impresia, Roche Diagnostics and Benetton.

Hogan Lovells International LLP provides an ‘excellent service’. Group head Luis Enrique de la Villa has a ‘profound understanding of labour law’ and Silvia Bauzá is also recommended. The firm was recently appointed to advise Telefónica on all its employment-related issues. Other clients include Capgemini, Bankia and Transcom.

Pérez-Llorca has an active three-partner team led by Luis Enrique Fernández Pallarés, and including Daniel Cifuentes and Fernando Ruiz. The firm advised on several high-profile restructurings, recently, and also represented Avis on a new collective bargaining agreement. Clients include Merck, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Costco.

Roca Junyent is praised for its ‘correct and professional’ advice. The team recently defended Unipost against union attempts to block a collective agreement affecting 2,500 staff. Practice head Albert Rodriguez Arnaiz is ‘good in trials’, while Àlex Santacana is considered a ‘great professional’ who ‘builds confidence’.

Alfonso Suárez heads the team at Araoz & Rueda, which recently advised Brightstar 2020 Mobile on two redundancy procedures involving over 100 employees. Other clients include the Becara Group, Orpea Group and British Foods.

Ashurst LLP’s ‘commercially oriented’ practice recently advised Ahorro Corporacion on the employment issues linked to the sale of a subsidiary. The ‘extremely business oriented’ and ‘smart and accessible’ team head, Diana Rodriguez Redondo, is ‘always sharp and to the point’.

Raquel Flórez leads the well-reputed employment, pensions and benefits team at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. The group can be relied upon for high-end, cross-border M&A-related employment advice, as well as disputes arising from reorganisations and collective redundancies.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados provides a ‘high level of service’ and clients appreciate the ‘responsiveness and deep analysis of legislation and case law applicable to each case’. Practice partners Ignacio Campos and Juan Antonio de Lanzas work from Madrid and Valencia respectively, and the team’s clients include GDF Suez, Smurfit Kappa, Nike and Coca-Cola.

King & Wood Mallesons provides employment advice to a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from recruiters such as Michael Page International to football clubs such as Valencia C. F. Carlos Gil heads the experienced practice group.
