Led by Sangjik Lee, Bae, Kim & Lee LLC’s TMT team has an ‘outstanding network, knowledge and expertise in the area’. In recent highlights, Lee, alongside ‘focused and efficient’ regulatory experts Ji Yeon Park and Kwang Hyun Ryoo, successfully represented KT Corporation in the first Korean ruling on whether, and to what amount, web companies can arbitrarily utilise their users’ PCs and rental networks. Jong Baek Park advised Bithumb and chaired the Cryptocurrency Committee aimed at resolving issues of fostering cryptocurrency exchanges, and also assisted Hancom in setting up its compliance programme. Joon Yong Park focuses on the management of large-scale M&As for broadcasting and telecoms companies.

Kim & Chang continues to be a prominent player in the TMT market. Department head Dong Shik Choi is singled out for his ‘excellent track record, experience and wisdom’ and his team frequently draws upon its multi-disciplinary expertise in M&A, antitrust and intellectual property to advise on complex large-scale transactions. Recent work highlights include Min Chul Park and Jung-Chull Lee assisting Mercedes-Benz Korea with the launch of a connected car service. Jin Hwan Kim and Brian Oh focus on litigation and regulatory issues, and Hyun Ho Eun represented NXC Corporation in its acquisition of the controlling shares of Korbit Inc. Seong-Hyeon Bang and In Sang Kim are also names to note.

Lee & Ko’s TMT group has a strong reputation acting for traditional media and telecoms clients and a growing speciality advising on fintech and cryptocurrencies. Practice head Soon-Yub Kwon’s expertise spans commercial transactions, regulatory and legislative matters. Kwang Bae Park is praised for his ‘flexibility, client friendliness and experience’; he advised Kyobo Life Insurance on a new service based on blockchain technology. M&A specialist Jubong Jang and Park have advised Emart on various legal issues related to the transfer of assets by an online shopping mall. Hyun Jung Kim is recommended for complex regulatory and licensing matters. Regulatory expert Hwan Kyoung Ko assisted the CJ Group with the establishment of a big data analysis platform.

Shin & Kim's TMT practice recently launched an IT support centre to provide advice for start-ups and SMEs. Sinook Kang leads the sizeable team which includes Juneyoung Jang, who advises SK telecom and KT Corporation on IT regulations, privacy and personal data protection issues. Sung Geun Kim specialises in telecoms-related transactions, while Su Yong Jung is an expert in communications and broadcasting law. The practice counts LGU+, Telenav, and Estsoft as clients which it advises on M&A, licensing, data protection and litigation.

Yulchon has a strong offering in data privacy and cybersecurity and has further strengthened its capacity with the recruitment of five experienced partners. Head of data privacy and protection Doil Son recently advised Cisco on the licensing of a new service, and along with Sun Hee Kim assists Mirae Asset Life Insurance with data privacy compliance issues. Key figures in the multi-disciplinary team include foreign counsel Jai Wook Lee, Seung Hyuck Han, Kee Jeong Kim and Seung-Min Lee.

Jipyong’s TMT practice advised SM Entertainment on the acquisition of a 28% interest in Mystic Entertainment. The group also regularly works with Showbox on several film investment agreements, development and production. Key contacts are Chang Ik Sung, So Young Lee, Mun Hui Kim and Jeong Kyu Choe.

Yoon & Yang LLC's multi-disciplinary group handles regulatory matters, M&A, licensing and dispute settlement for clients including BTC Korea.com and CNH Industrial. Kwang-Wook Lee leads the team; he and senior foreign attorney Kenneth Kim advised CNH Industrial on personal data protection compliance matters.
